A pillar of black smoke that could be seen for miles, rises from a burning barn off Wallace Gregg Road at its intersection with Wallace Road in Florence, SC, Friday afternoon, Sept. 25, 2009. Firefighters from Windy Hill Volunteer Fire Company shuttled water in tankers into the blaze.
FLORENCE – Firefighters from Windy Hill and Howe Springs volunteer fire departments saved most of a storage building that caught fire Friday afternoon.
Located at the intersection of Wallace and Wallace Gregg Roads, the building was set afire by a debris fire that spread, Windy Hill Volunteer Fire Company Chief John DeLung said.
“The guys did a great job, saved three quarters of the property,” DeLung said.
A part of Wallace Gregg Road was blocked intermittently as tankers shuttled water into the fire.
The building was 3,000-4,000 square feet, DeLung said.
Howe Springs responded with an engine company for mutual aid.
