Escaped inmate captured in Lumberton

Investigators with the S.C. Department of Corrections captured an inmate in Robeson County Tuesday evening.

Josh Gelinas with the corrections department said Vernon Gardner walked away from Coastal Pre-Release Center in Charleston on Monday. He said Gardner surrendered around 5:00 p.m. Tuesday.

Gardner was being transported to Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville, a maximum-security prison. He faces felony escape, a charge that carries up to 15-years in prison.
