Darlington man charged with cattle rustling
A Darlington man is charged with cattle rustling after deputies said he shot someone’s cow to death in a field, Darlington County Sheriff’s Lt. Robin Bryant said.
David James Cortes, 37, of 625 Hidden Lane, also is charged with grand larceny of livestock and malicious injury to animals, Bryant said.
Cattle rustling is another term for stealing cattle and, at one time, was punishable by hanging, Bryant said.
The crime happened Saturday on a pasture off Hartland Drive when the resident said he heard gunshots. He drove to where his cattle were grazing and saw a truck parked in the middle of the field. The truck took off down a dirt road and the resident found one of his cattle shot to death, Bryant said.
The suspect was arrested after a brief investigation, Bryant said.
Darlington deputies haven’t made any cattle rustling arrests recently, but it used to be quite common in the 1800s and 1900s, Bryant said.
“I don’t know what the penalty is, but I doubt it’s a hanging offense,” he said. “But at one time in South Carolina that was a very serious crime to steal someone’s steer.”
The Hartland Drive cow was determined to be valued at $1,100, he said.
It’s unclear why the suspect shot the cow, but with a lagging economy, some people have been known to shoot another person’s cattle for food, the lieutenant said.
Cortes remains in custody at the Darlington County jail under a $5,000 surety bond.

I agree with cats4me. Lisa is a miserable , ignorant person. Also a crime is a crime, if they are shooting cattle for food (which I doubt) there are other ways of getting food. He probably just wanted to shoot his gun. If he was hungry he could sell his gun and get food with the money, but since I dont think like a criminal I would think of an honest way handling my problems. I also agree of going back to the old ways of punishment, if criminals see someone hanging they will think twice about committing a crime, and it will keep our jails from being overcrowded.
JLEE - it has come to everyones attention that LISA is a twit when it comes to her comments. Anyone with common sense knows that even though these may seem like minor crimes to us - it is a major crime to those being stolen from. I wish we could reinstate the old ways of punishment - this world would be a lot better off!
I honestly feel that “lisa” needs to realize that yes this was wrong because he did not own the cow but how do you think cows are slaughtered? they are not put to sleep and then nicely butchered. The way the economy is going, people are going to do desperate things to feed their family.
You know lisa some people like reading articles that contain a “sense of humor” in them, not always about people shooting each other, and home invasions. This is also a crime, and like it says it was of a serious nature back in the 1800 and 1900’s. Maybe we need to go back to the punisable offenses like hanging and chain gangs, maybe some people would think twice about what they are doing. I know this is ytour opinion, but IT IS NEWS.
Only WBTW and the Morning News would have “cattle rustling” in there headlines.
Call it what it is .. “Murdering a cow”!
