DHEC to hear public comments, again, on proposed Britton’s Neck landfill
In his administrative report, Marion County Administrator Tim Harper updated council members this past Thursday night on a proposed construction and demolition (C&D) landfill in Britton’s Neck.
According to a letter sent to concerned citizens, dated March 24, by S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control officials, on March 4, the department received a revised permit application from 908 C&D Landfill, LLC, for a new Class 2 landfill. The highly disputed landfill site is at the intersection of Hosea Graves Road and 908 in the Britton’s Neck area and several community residents have protested the landfill during the past two years of its application process.
The revised application, the letter said, was prepared in response to the comments received from concerned citizens during the public comment period that followed the first draft permit issued on Sept. 5, 2008.
In November, DHEC officials sent a letter to those hoping to create the construction and demolition landfill that said officials were “echoing the comments received from the public,” and listing deficiencies in the permit application for the applicant to address.
The applicant’s response was the revised permit application received by DHEC on March 4 and a groundwater detection monitoring plan received on March 13. The application and plan satisfy DHEC’s requirements, the letter said, and a new draft permit was issued.
The plan and application are available for review and comment. The 30-day public comment period ends on May 1. To review the documents, call John McCain and his staff at (803) 896-4067, the letter said. E-mails may be sent to .
In other business, Harper asked for, and received, permission to allow a softball team, organized by Billy Robinson, to use the Springbranch Community ball fields, on U.S. Highway 501 Business, for practices and games.
According to Robinson, in a letter to council making the request, the team was accepted into the Pee Dee Regional Softball League in mid-March. Robinson said the team would help maintain the field as much as possible.
“We’re trying to encourage others to play, young and old,” he said. For information about the team, call Robinson at (843) 433-5103.
