Commission finds no historic value in Florence building

The Florence City-County Historical Commission has reached a unanimous decision that a building at 200 S. Coit St. has no historical significance to prohibit its demolition.

The building, which is believed to have been built in 1958, is just outside the Florence Historical District, commission chairwoman Marshall Yarborough said at Monday’s regular meeting.

The Greater Florence Chamber of Commerce recently purchased the building and plans to demolish it later this month, Yarborough said.

Several businesses have occupied the building over the years, and it was most recently an unofficial teen center, Yarborough said.

A design review board will examine the issue Wednesday as the next step in the chamber getting approval for demolition, Yarborough said.
