A 3-year old boy died Sunday as a result of a single-car collision that killed his 10-year-old sister Saturday about six miles east of Kingstree.

The crash occurred at about 2:10 p.m. on Secondary 456, also known as Wilson Chapel Road, where the driver and mother of the children, Tami Ivonne Turner of Kingstree, lost control of her vehicle when the road curved to the left, according to S.C. Highway Patrol reports. The car ended up turned over in a field on the right side of the road.

The girl, Tamaya Burgess, was pronounced dead on the scene after being thrown about 25 to 30 feet from the car, Williamsburg County Deputy Coroner Vernell Fulton said.

The boy, Tamel Watson, was taken to McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence where he died Sunday morning, Fulton said.

Turner, 40, was treated and released from Williamsburg Regional Hospital.

The crash remains under investigation by the highway patrol.

Yes this ia a tragedy, but take a look at the child restraint statutes.    56-5-6450 and 56-5-6410.I have given countless citations for child restraint violations only to have them thrown out by a judge.56-5-6450 pretty much states that if you are charged for a child restraint violation you can have the charges thrown out, so long as you bring proof to court that you do have or have purchased a child restraining system. This law needs to be revised and higher fines need to be applied.I would say that 80% of the violaters that i have charged did have a proper system and did have it in place, they just refused to RESTRAIN the child in it. oh and yes there charges were thrown out by the judge as well.So my opinion is yes this is a tragedy and yes someone needs to be held accountable.

OK [pen15], understood. Now to the REAL probable cause of the tragedy. A properly trained and careful driver would, in most cases be aware of vehicle speed and capability on a given curve so as to not leave the road and overturn in the first place. In which case
this accident would not have happened, and we would not be Monday morning quarterbacking.

crow, that’s the whole point.  We wouldn’t be on here talking about it if the mother: 1, used some common sense, and 2, obeyed the law.  I feel truly sorry for the children, but not so much for the mother, she failed them.

Enough already! Stop the braying about seat belts and toddler seats. All of the above is already prohibited by law. Just what do you suggest, a road side execution for a parent who fails to obey a common sense misdemeanor level offense? The parent has enough misery already without your carping.

Yes it is truly horrible what happened to these children.  But, as far as talking about the causes, if not now then when.  When the family has been given time then when somone makes comments about seeing kids unrestrained in cars you will hear comments about over reacting.  These children are dead and that is a tragedy and I feel truly horrible about the loss.  The feelings of the family that didn’t secure them with a car seat or seat belt..not so much.

I agree with the seatbelt comment it is sad to see all these children riding around unrestrained however this is not the time to be making harsh comments.  This family is suffering a great loss.  There is nothing more tragic than the loss of a child.  Please lets be respectful to the family.

How many times does a tragedy like this have to happen before people wake up and realize that children should be in car seats or have seat belts.  I constantly see the children with no seatbelt or anything while the driver is belted in.  Actions (or inaction in this case) have consequences.
