FLORENCE — The S.C. Women’s Connection has its last leadership luncheon of the year in Florence on Wednesday with special guest Mignon Clyburn, newly-appointed member of the Federal Communications Commission and a South Carolina native.

About 50 women — professionals from every sector of the business world — gathered at Floyd Conference Center at Carolinas Hospital System for the event.

Clyburn spoke about her journey from being the daughter of U.S. Rep. James E. Clyburn to the owner and operator of a weekly newspaper in Charleston and now to her new position with the FCC.

“I’ve always sought to serve the public interest,” she said. “I see myself as a conduit, a channel running from everyday people to making policy and back to the people.”

The S.C. Women’s Connection, initiated by the Clemson Institute for Economic and Community Development, is a statewide organization working to improve economic opportunity and quality of life by advancing the status of women through research, teaching, and service programs.

This leadership lunch series is just one way the group works to raise the status of women in the Palmetto State, co-director Jennifer Boyles said.

“We encourage women to become more involved in the community,” she said.

Hang out at the DSS parking lot for a while and check out the ‘poor’ driving up in nice cars and SUV’s wearing fancy cloths with cell phones stuck to their ears. Some will collect their gobmint freebie checks and go shopping for the latest DVD’s to feed their plasma TV’s and bless their kids with $150.00 Nike tennis shoes and $50.00 hoodies for their night time ‘activities’.

Not all but enough to show how this country has been turned upside down by folks like Clyburn to shake what change is left out of the pockets of honest, hardworking Americans.

All the Clyburns need to move to California so they can be with their best friends the Pelosi’s.

Thats right:  when you “fall down and struggle”, and are laid off you need a safty net.

Thats quite different from generation after generation of many families depending on the government for all their needs…..those that follow the recipe for povery, generation after generation who think somebody owes them a living.
If you think those people are rare, you are fooling yourself.

Walter William’s recipe for success:
Avoiding long-term poverty is not rocket science. First, graduate from high school. Second, get married before you have children, and stay married. Third, work at any kind of job, even one that starts out paying the minimum wage. And, finally, avoid engaging in criminal behavior.

“The problem with this country today is lack of self sufficiency and a growing feeling that the government should take care of all your needs , not me pointing that out.“

I don’t think so.  This is what I’m talking about re: ignorance and intolerance.  You make it sound like everyone is just sitting around, looking for a handout, but I know that’s not the case.  We, the citizens of the United States, one of the richest countries in the world, should be able to depend on our government when we fall down and when we’re struggling.  I suppose you believe that working poor families should be left out in the cold starving when the breadwinner is laid off or gets ill?

You are right CG. Don’t shoot the messenger. The truth will set you free. A lot of people in D.C. could learn from that. The place reeks of corruption and lies.

Its just a wild coincidence who her daddy is?

“GG, it’s a lack of understanding, intolerance, and general negativity from you and others like you that is the problem with this country today.“

You just don’t like the truth.

“The Coastal Times, which seems to have folded after Clyburn departed, had a circulation of about 5,500 free and paid copies, mostly to black churches, according to Behre of The Post and Courier.“

A give-a-way pamplet that didn’t make enough profit for anyone to even buy.
Wait a second….that sounds just like what the government does - give-a-way and never mind making a profit or paying for anything.
Mmm, I guess she is qualified then & she has the right family connections.

I think statistics will show that most of those ‘working poor’ did those afore mentioned things.

Its called a ‘recipe for poverty’. And it is very sad & pitiful.
