BENNETTSVILLE – The Marlboro County Board of Zoning Appeals meeting on a proposed landfill at Wallace isn’t until Tuesday, but members of Citizens for Marlboro County are already working to pack the room and defeat the appeal.
“What we’re doing is letting people be aware the fight isn’t over,” Belvin Sweatt, group chairman, said as he and a group of protestors stood outside the county courthouse in Bennettsville Saturday morning.
At issue is a 300-plus acre landfill proposed by developer MRR Sandhills LLC for the Wallace community on the Chesterfield-Marlboro County line.
That proposal has been denied by both Marlboro County Council and the county’s planning commission.
The battle over the landfill has been going on for more than two years and while it has been denied twice, Sweatt said that is far from being a done deal.
“We will still continue to fight we’re not one to give up. If it takes five years, 10 years, 15 years we’re still going to be here to fight against them.” Sweatt said.
Tuesday’s meeting is at the courthouse and starts at 6 p.m.
