At about 2 p.m. this afternoon, South Lynches Fire Department responded to a structure fire at Scranton Metal.

According to South Lynches Fire Department Administrator/Deputy Chief, John Baker, metal was being cut in an interior room when the ceiling caught fire. Baker said it was a smoldering fire with no flames and no one was injured.

The building, at 630 North Old Georgetown Road, just outside Lake City, was originally built in the early 1950’s as Camerontown School. After the school closed, a sewing factory, Camereontown Industries occupied the building for a while before its most recent tenants opened the salvage business.

According to Co-Owner, Rebecca Gause, only minor damage was done to the building and following a little clean-up, the business will operate as usual. The retail business offers small appliances, kitchen items, antiques, jewelry, clothing and furniture and is open Tuesday thru Saturday from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

Johnsonville Fire Department sent units to assist during the hour the firefighters worked to insure all fire hazards were properly dealt with and Florence County Emergency Medical Service sent an ambulance to stand by while they worked.
