FLORENCE — Two Florence men and a teen have been arrested in connection with the death of a 69-year-old Florence woman whose body was found early Wednesday morning on the northeast side of Florence.

Willie Mae Hayes had been reported missing by her family Monday. An autopsy showed she died of multiple stab wounds to her upper body, Florence County Coroner M.G. “Bubba” Matthews said.

David Gerrard Johnson, 22, of 419 W. Sumter St., and Rashawn Jerome Bailey, 19, of 114 Liberty St., are each charged with first-degree murder, first-degree burglary, armed robbery and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, Chief Anson Shells said during a press conference Wednesday morning.

A 14-year-old boy also faces those charges in connection with the case and has been taken to the state Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia, Florence Police Maj. Carlos Raines said.

Both men are convicted felons whose criminal records include burglary charges, according to State Law Enforcement Division arrest reports.

Bailey had been released from the Florence County Detention Center in Effingham on Aug. 21 on a $20,000 surety bond for second-degree violent burglary and assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature.

Investigators, with the help of witnesses, were able to identify people thought to know the circumstances surrounding Hayes’ disappearance, according to a press release from Shells.

SLED helicopter agents attempted to conduct an an aerial search of the property near Hayes’ home and the perimeter of Florence on Tuesday afternoon but were thwarted by the weather. SLED, the Florence County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Marshals Service all assisted in the investigation.

Family members last spoke with Hayes about 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Her family suspected something was wrong when they couldn’t reach her and she didn’t show up to work Monday at a day-care center where she is employed, Raines said.

Police began to investigate Monday afternoon soon after she was reported missing, Raines said. When officers arrived at her home in the 200 block of West Liberty Street, it looked like someone had forced his or her way inside.

Several items, in addition to Hayes’ car, were stolen from her home, Raines said.

Officers later found Hayes’ vehicle backed into a parking space at an apartment complex on Roughfork Street, which is about a block from her home. Raines said it appears people other than Hayes had been in the car recently.

Hayes’ body was found about 2 a.m. Wednesday morning in a ditch on Malloy Street, a dirt road that meets with Wilson Road. Her body had been wrapped in a bedspread from her home and concealed by weeds, investigators said.

“I just can’t understand how someone could be so cruel, and so uncaring for another human being, especially a senior citizen,” Hayes’ brother, Marion Dolford, said. “I started to lose hope, but I have a deep faith in Christ and so I hoped for the best, but deep inside was expecting the worst, and unfortunately it turned out that it was the worst news that I could have possibly ever gotten.

“There was a sinking feeling inside, that told me this was the inevitable news,” he said. “It was crushing. It was one of those feelings that no one would every want to experience. It was something that I shall remember for the rest of my life. It actually changed my life and so it goes deep, extremely deep.”

“We extend our deepest sympathy and our prayers to the family of Ms. Hayes,” Shells said in his release. “We know that nothing can reverse what has happened, but we hope that these and future arrests bring some closure for the family.”

Ernest Dolford, another of Hayes’ brothers, said the discovery of his sister’s body and the arrest of two suspects brings the family some relief.

“As the time went by, I began to lose hope already anyhow, but since she had been found, there was a relief to know that at least we had her back ... even in that state, but at least we had her back,” he said. “We’ll just stay close together, we’ll pray, spend all the time we can with each other, especially with the younger ones and encourage them to hang tough and do their best to live a life like their mother, their aunt, our sister.

“She was loved by her family, loved by her community and by her church, where she was very faithful.”

Willie Jones, who’d been Hayes’ neighbor since the 1960s, agreed.

“She was a kind person. She was an easygoing person,” Jones said. “(She) loved to go to church. She been in three or four, five things at church.”

Jones also described Hayes as a good neighbor and can’t believe she was the victim of such a violent crime.

“We all around here is good neighbors. We love one another, do things for one another,” she said. “That somebody could be so mean and selfish to come and just take her from her home ... You know what I mean? That’s bad. I couldn’t understand it.”

I just heard about the murder, yes another murder, of Ms. Willie Mae Hayes who was also missing and was killed by a repeat offender.  My sincere condolences go out to her son & family.

My husband is a cop and believe me he gets tired of busting his tail to put these no good pieces of trash behind bars only to the Ed Clemmons & his assistant along with some of the judges turn these animals back out on the street only to be up to no good!!!!!

I agree we should have public hangings to send a message!  Then let’s make the others in jail get off their butt and work for 10 hours a day.  Let them dig ditches; pick up trash or what ever needs to be done.  And, yes, shoot to kill at the first sign that anyone looks like they are going to run.  Enough is enough; at least 3 deceased/murdered people in less than a week.  People you need to used your right to bear arms after you take a gun safety course.  Florence & the surrounding area has become a violent place and is only going to get worse.

Yea (jim) but dont you see if they had to work ,when they are waiting for 15 yrs of appeals to get the needle maybe they would try to run and then the guard could shoot them and they could see what its like , and it could be justified. Work is what they hate the most , lets give it to em!!!!!

Sorry (hicktick), but the chain-gang is for petty criminals and deadbeats. Murderers, especially ones of this violent nature, need to be wiped off the earth. And in public, so that others will think twice about the consequinces of such dispicable acts. What this country needs is a good ole’ fashion hangin’.

On July 3 2008- August 21,2008 Rashawn Bailey was sitting in jail for Violent Burglery 2nd offence, and assult and battery with high and aggravated nature!!!!  4 days later he was involved in the Death of Ms. Willie Mae Hayes!! He has been arrested 6 times since January 2007. What is wrong with this picture. Our Police officers bust A** to get these people of the street and the judges turn them back out faster than they were brought in!! After 4 robbery charges of some sort then a vio;ent why isnt he still sitting there. NO he was released after committing a violent crime to now kill an innocent women!! And we are shocked? We should be mad at these judges and The police should be mad that they risk their lives and waist their time arresting the same people over and over again. Judges OPEN YOUR EYES!!!!

This is so wrong ,my prayers are with the family. This kind of thing is happening everyday and it didnt use to be this way .Want to blame someone , blame the librals, they did away with the CHAINGANG , these punks arent scared to go to prison they have their gangs and its an honor to go to prison. When will the people wake up and realize the only way to punish them is to give them the thing that they hate worse than anything , and that is a JOB, thats why they rob and murder , because they are too lazy to work.Back in the day a sentance was at hard labor, prison should be a ten hour shift working and they would take the burden off the tax payer. Bring back the Chaingang and we would see a big change in crime, and no need to build new prisions.

I know I’ll get a lot of bad comments directed back at me for this. But the only way I see to deter this kind of thing from happening is public executions. If these animals were hung on the front steps of the city county complex, then there would be some closure for this poor family. And the other young stupid punks out there would see for themselves what happens when you do something as voilent and cruel as these demons did. As it is now, they will get life terms and everyone, except the victom’s family of coarse, will forget about them. And in a year or two, or less, this IS gonna happen again. Call it barbaric, call it cruel. But what do you call what happened to this poor lady. IN HER HOME! These monsters should pay with their lives for this. And their sorry a$$ parents should be made to watch from the front row. And may God have NO mercy on there evil souls.

To shareara – This incident did not happen in the county, it was in the City of Florence; so wait before you point fingers.  But, it has happened in the past all over our city, county and state.  And will continue to happen because of the society of drugs, gangs, & so on that we live in these days.  The problem is with the justice system in Columbia and Washington; not at a city or county level.  Those who dictate about jail over crowding. I feel like the animals that did this type of crime should be killed the same way that they killed Ms. Hayes.  Or worse, take them out to the swamp or alligator alley & let the animals have them.  They do not deserve any type of mercy such as lethal injection or life in prison that we, as taxpayers, have to pay for.

We must take precautions to protect our family and ourselves.  I know that there are plenty of idiots running around on the streets just waiting for the chance to rob, stab, & kill you or worse.  Until citizens take an active roll in crime prevention, things are only going to get worse.  You need to support your local law enforcement and present a united front and stick with it.

My deepest thoughts & prayers go out to the Hayes family.

Can anyone tell me why these boys were walking the streets after being in jail 3 days prior.Yes I agree the Judges are letting them out when the shouldn’t.No one is safe in Florence anymore. Was this maybe gang related? Why was a 14 yar old involved in such a violant crime. I myself, WILL purchase a taser and take a self defense class, but isn’t that sad that this is what you need to do JUST to live in your own homes….My heart goes out the the Hayes family, this is a terrible loss, not only for you but the city of Florence. Tighten up Florence, gets these criminals off our streets, get this GANG activity under control and stop letting these peolpe OUT of jail. This is the fault of the Judges that just don’t care…...Maybe when it’s your family member, you’ll think differently…..

Florence County has their prioities mixed up. You are too busy worrying about making alchol legal on Sundays instead of keeping these criminals off the streets killing our children and the elderly of our communities. Wake up and take control of the streets and stop trying to bring the devil in. We have enough going on now that we cant control and you trying to start new laws.
