LAKE CITY — Members of the Lake City Rotary Club recently witnessed a presentation that chronicled the time fellow Rotarian and state attorney general candidate Alan Wilson spent in Iraq.

Wilson, a Rotarian from the Midlands, was the guest speaker for the Rotary Club’s most recent meeting, held Friday. He is the son of U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson.

He is a 1996 graduate of Francis Marion University and a 2002 graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law. He is a veteran of the military who joined the National Guard after graduating from Francis Marion University.

Wilson gave a PowerPoint presentation that depicted the generation of soldiers now in Iraq. Wilson said he wanted to share with his fellow Rotarians the “warm” feeling he received when he was in Iraq as well as the “pride” he felt when he was in the country.

“We were honored to be there,” Wilson said to the group gathered at Prosser’s Restaurant. “We were honored to serve.”

Wilson said he always gets emotional every time he shows the presentation and speaks to audiences about his experiences in Iraq.

He said he wanted his fellow Rotarians to see a different side of Iraq, the “humanitarianism” and “people trying to do God’s work.”

“I look back with fond memories,” Wilson said of his time in Iraq.

Wilson was invited to speak by Lake City Rotary past President Dr. William McDaniel. McDaniel said he invited Wilson to speak because they are related by marriage, McDaniel said.

Wilson’s wife, Jennifer Wilson, is a former WIS News 10 general assignment reporter and anchor who is now director of public relations for Lexington Medical Center. The couple has one son, Michael, and is expecting a second child in December.

Wilson is a former Lexington County assistant solicitor and state assistant attorney general.

He said he has been a part of Rotary since the age of 4 and that he officially became a Rotarian about seven years ago.

Twelfth Circuit Solicitor Ed Clements III, who serves in Florence and Marion counties, will be the speaker at this coming Friday’s Rotary meeting.
