Two Pageland men who failed to show up for their trial have been sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Juan Maroles, 18, and Juan Sanchez, 22, were convicted of second-degree burglary and petit larceny, according to a press release from Assistant 4th Circuit Solicitor Adam M. Foard.

They were charged in connection with an August 2008 theft in Pageland. Pageland Police Sgt. Nathan Brucke caught Maroles and Sanchez enteringa storage unit rented by Lance Crackers during the nighttime by breaking a lock and placed a quantity of Lance products in their vehicle. After being detained, Sanchez confessed to the crime and gave a statement regarding Maroles’ role.

Fourth Circuit Court Judge Paul M. Burch handed unsealed the sentence during general sessions court in Chesterfield County on Thursday after the defendants were located.

“The sentence in this case is a reflection on the fact that property crime must be taken seriously,” Foard said. “Twelve years will hopefully teach these young men a lesson and send a message to the community that thefts and burglaries of this nature will not be tolerated.”

It is hard to say if this sentence is justified without knowing their past criminal record. If they have a record of this sort of crime in the past then it might very well be justified. On the other hand if this is a first offense, they should not receive more then a Juan year sentence.

I also agree that the punishment didn’t fit the crime.  Honestly I know someone who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter who received a lighter sentence than this.  That makes no sense to me.  Yes they should be punished but that is a long time for stealing some chips, crackers, and cookies.  Our judicial system at times makes no sense.

You’re right, JLee. If they had murdered or assaulted someone they would have walked with hardly any punishment.

Latta man got 2 1/2 years for credit card fraud and aggrivated identity theft.  This is unreal!!

I think that is a little bit too harsh for something that isn’t even violent, and the other crimes are getting less sentences.
