Bond has been denied for the two suspects accused of killing a decorated World War II veteran outside a Florence hotel room Monday morning.

Sylvester Davis, 25, of Darlington, was arrested about 12:15 p.m. Tuesday after a brief vehicle chase in Darlington County, Sheriff Kenney Boone said. Davis was in a stolen Chevy Tahoe when he was spotted by law enforcement officers near Holly Circle in Darlington County.

Dondre Scott, 17, also of Darlington, was arrested about 5:30 p.m. Monday at a residence on Pisgah Road in Darlington County, Boone said.

Davis and Scott each face a murder charge in connection with Clair C. Chaffin’s death. Each also is charged with four counts of armed robbery.

Sylvester Davis Jr., left, and Dondre Scott were arrested in connection with the shooting death of 83-year-old World War II veteran Clair C. Chaffin.

SLED BACKGROUND CHECKS

Read the SLED background checks for Sylvester Davis, 25, of Darlington and Dondre Scott, 16, also of Darlington, who were arrested and charged in the shooting death of Clair C. Chaffin at the Thunderbird Inn in Florence June 8.

Florence County Magistrate Belinda Timmons denied bond for both men on the armed robbery charges after a hearing Wednesday afternoon in Effingham, saying she felt they are a danger to society, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.

According to state law enforcement division records, Davis has an extensive arrest record dating back to 2003 and has been charged with more than five felonies.

In September 2003 Davis was arrested by Florence police and charged with manufacturing and/or possession of narcotics with the intent to distribute, possession of crack cocaine with intent to distribute near a school, unlawful carrying of a weapon, possession of a stolen pistol, possession of a stolen vehicle and assault of a police officer while resisting arrest.

For both the misdemeanor weapon charge and misdemeanor resisting arrest charge, he was sentenced to 60 days in jail and court costs in March 2004.

In March 2004, he was sentenced to three years in jail suspended to six months for the stolen vehicle charge, a felony.

The disposition of the remaining charges, all felonies, wasn’t clear from SLED reports.

In November 2003, Davis was arrested by Darlington police and charged with first-degree burglary, two counts of grand larceny and second-degree burglary, all felonies. In October, he was again arrested by Darlington police for public drunkenness.

In January, SLED records show, Davis’ probation was revoked.

Timmons said the suspects will be arraigned in general sessions court Aug. 7 for the murder charge.

“I think this is going to be a death penalty case,” Boone said Tuesday.

Prosecutors are considering that option, 12th Circuit Solicitor Ed Clements III said.

The U.S. Supreme Court prohibits the death penalty being sought against someone under the age of 18, however, Clements said.

Twelfth Circuit attorneys would have to determine who exactly pulled the trigger, then will decide how to pursue the case, he said.

Chaffin, 83 of Archer, Fla., was shot Monday while he was in the process of packing his vehicle after being confronted by two men in an attempted armed robbery about 7 a.m. at the Thunderbird Inn, located at 2004 W. Lucas St., at the U.S. 52/Interstate 95 intersection.

Chaffin was taken to an area hospital, where he later died. An autopsy at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston confirmed the cause of his death as a gunshot wound to the chest area, Florence County Coroner M.G. “Bubba” Matthews said.

Chaffin’s shooting is directly related to a robbery that happened in Richland County at 2 a.m. Sunday, Boone said.

That crime happened at the Motel 6 located at 7541 Nates Road where an off-duty probation agent was robbed at gunpoint of her credentials and state-issued .40-caliber handgun, according to a press release issued Monday by Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott.

The probation agent was working a security detail at the motel when two unknown black men approached her while she was sitting in her car, Lott said.

The agent said the suspects fled in a burgundy Nissan bearing S.C. license tag DDE 725, which Lott said matched the description of the vehicle involved in Monday morning’s fatal Florence County shooting.

Investigators are trying to determine whether the weapon used in the Florence homicide is the same as the weapon stolen in the Richland County robbery, Boone said.

State and federal charges against the suspects are being pursued, Boone said.

The suspects will likely continue to be detained in Effingham because of the seriousness of the charges they face in Florence County, Boone said. At some point, other agencies will send deputies copies of warrants and detainers relating to the suspects.

A third person in custody will likely be charged in connection with an armed robbery involving the suspects, but not in connection with Chaffin’s death, Boone said. The identity of that person hasn’t been released.

These crimes remain under investigation, and anyone with information about them is asked to call the state Crime Stoppers hotline at (888) CRIME SC (274-6372). Callers need not reveal their identities.

DeeDee & Reddog: Thank you both for refreshing comments. You are both right on the money. Also, as suspected both of those animals have a criminal past and should have been in jail when this awful murder happened. I hope whoever is responsible for them being on the street is very proud of themselves. You should be tried right along with them for murder one.

To DeeDee:  I am proud of your comment!  I admire your thoughts!  I did leave a comment about the thugs and that I felt that they should be hung at the town square and not waste the taxpayers’ money!  I was criticized and told that my true colors were shining through.  But the truth of the matter is this:  I don’t care if these thugs were red, yellow, blue, green or any other color.  My opinion would still be the same.  There is not a racist bone in my body!  I am white - but some of my closest friends have been black.  I am just thankful that I have friends that have been so loyal!

Playing the RACE card is really getting old. These are two criminals that committed a crime and deserve to pay. Their selfish acts landed them where they are. They had no concern for the family of the deceased nor did they have any concern for their own family, or the other innocent bystanders in their rooms maybe with their children..because if they did they would have never made the choices that they made that day or throughout life. I can say this because I am BLACK. Everyone is presented with choices and every choice comes with a consequence. Come on black people lay the race card to rest and start allowing the ones that commit crimes to OWN up and take repsponsibility….It wasn’t society that did this to them…It’s them that shamed society!
My condolences to the Families. May God continue to keep you.

reddog : Well said!

This will be my last post on this subject. first let me say their is alot of anger here, and some comments about things that people feel need to be done to make Florence a better place to live. Plese write, E-mail your city and county council members, or attend the Florence city and county council meetings and let your council members know that you will not tolerate it anymore and you want action now.
Now for (real talk), I just browsed back through most the post, and I did not find a whole lotta of comment on the color of anybodys skin until I came to your utterly ignorant comments. and so now that you brought up the issue of race, let me give you my opinion. I do not know the race of anybody on this site, but the people on this site have made their comments in grief and anger with the way things are shaking out in their community, and they have only made comments, no actions other then that. now lets compare this to another recent event, On New Years morning in Oakland California, a White Law enforciment officer for the Bay Area Rapid Transet district shot a black man and the man died. The following night members of the comunity (The Majority of them Black, at least 90%) Rioted, looted and burned portions of Oakland,CA. Oakland had nothing to do with the first incident, but the black people involved did not care, they just wanted to destroy and steal, and used this tragedy as an excuse. now lets get back to my point, It is people like you, Ed Robinson, Jessie Jackson, Al Sharpton, NAACPA and the ACLU that help keep RACISEM alive and fermenteing in our country. And most of them are making a very good profit off of Racisem.
The Criminal element in our society needs to be locked up and kept off the streets, no matter what the color of their skin. and members of society need to stop making excuses for the actions of criminals.

I think that you all are really being harsh about the situation.  Everyone is innocent unti proven guilty.  If this was an African American who got killed that had done the same things as the man who got killed and was killed by two white men would you all feel the same way? H^ll no yall would not.  For the person who said that they should be hung I think that you are really showing your colors.  I see now that we still live in Racist Society.  I pray for the victims family and I hope that they will get through this hard time, but the suspects family also have a burden to bear also in this situation. No one wants to do nice things for people when they are living but when they die everyone wants to come up with ways to thank them for what they have done. TOO LATE!

I’d like commend hjackson on his/her whitty observation. We have a solicitor in the 12th circuit that has NEVER tried a death penalty case since being in office. So these defendants can breath a sigh of relief.
