FLORENCE — Students at Carver Elementary School in Florence were in the holiday spirit as the school collected about 1,800 food items to be donated to The Manna House just in time for Thanksgiving.Published: November 20, 2007
Kelly Galloway, the school’s speech therapist and chairwoman of the school’s Spirit and Pride committee, said the committee decided to make this year’s fundraiser a school-wide competition where students would bring in items to support their favorite team, the University of South Carolina Gamecocks or Clemson University Tigers. The students who favor Clemson brought in the most items.
Galloway said each teacher tallied his or her class results, and some teachers extended the project into classroom lessons.
Katharine Wharton, a third-grade teacher at Carver, said she incorporated the project into her addition and subtraction math lessons.
Wharton’s third-grade class was the school winner by bringing in 222 food items. The class’ goal was to bring in 200 food items.
“A lot of the children don’t think beyond themselves,” she said. “This gave them an opportunity to actually do something for others and it was something pretty easy for most of them to do.”
The Manna House, located at 450 Jarrott St., has been providing entire meals and food items to hungry men, women and children in the Florence community since 1992.
The Manna House, a nonprofit and non-denominational emergency food pantry and soup kitchen, is open from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. and provides meals five days a week. Lunch is served from 11 a.m. until noon.
The emergency food pantry is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 to 11 a.m.
The Manna House accepts canned goods such as beef stew, potted meat, soups, vegetables and fruit, and dry items such as rice, pasta and instant coffee.

These items can be delivered to The Manna House between 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. If someone is unable to deliver the food during that time, arrangements can be made for a pick-up or another delivery time.
