FLORENCE — Francis Marion University President Dr. Fred Carter announced that former state Rep. James “Jim” McGee will be the university’s legislative liaison, effective Dec. 1.
“Jim McGee is ideally suited for this position,” Carter said during the board of trustees’ quarterly meeting Friday. “He knows the legislature well and is trusted and respectedly by its leadership. He will be a wonderful addition to this university.
McGee is replacing Daniel Dukes, who resigned to purse a position at the College of Charleston, and will serve part-time.
The announcement was made after Carter recognized Dukes and Julie Bush, retiring director of enrollment management and associate provost, for their service to the university and presented them with proclamations for their contributions.
“Julie and Daniel are both close, personal friends and they have served this university well,” Carter said. “This is our way of recognizing their extraordinary and sustained accomplishments, and expresses our appreciation for their dedication and commitment to Francis Marion.”
Bush, a Aiken native, supervised the offices of admissions, advising and retention, registrar and financial assistance.
Dukes, a native of St. George, has been involved with governmental relations for the university for the past four years.
McGee practices general law as an attorney with Dusenbury, Snow & McGee P.A. in Florence.
During McGee’s tenure in the S.C. House of Representatives from 1997-2006, he served on the several committees including Ways and Means.
McGee also was an adjunct professor at the university in 1995 and a news anchor for WBTW News13 from 1983-1992.
McGee received a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from the University of South Carolina in 1982. While there, he majored in journalism and minored in criminal justice. He also received his law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law.
McGee and his wife, Kathy Marie Shirley, have a son, J.G. McGee IV.
Also during the meeting, the board approved a Bachelor of Science in music industry degree.
Students seeking the degree will be required to complete 122 credit hours.
Students who graduate with the degree could pursue careers in publishing; marketing and management; and recording, production and broadcast.
“This is a perfect degree for us to offer,” Carter said. “It involves a collaboration between our fine arts department and our school of business.
“Not only does it satisfies needs for a music-related degree in this area, but it also provides the type of degree that clearly has applicability to commerce and industry.”
The university’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), which is part of its process for reaffirmation of accreditation for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, also was approved.
For the past two years, the university has been developing its QEP, a plan that supports the mission of the university and includes elements that will enhance student learning.
