Van Winkle drops protest in county council race

Keith Van Winkle may have come very close to beating incumbent Marion Foxworth for the Horry County Council seat representing Carolina Forest, but it wasn’t enough.

Tuesday morning, in a statement sent to local media, Van Winkle conceded the election, which he lost by less than one percent of the vote.
The vote was re-counted, and Foxworth actually gained some votes in the recount.

In the statement, Van Winkle showed gratitude for his supporters.

“I may have lost the race, which I take full responsibility for,“ he said. “But I am forever grateful to all of you for the confidence you have shown me.“
Van Winkle said he was “disheartened” by the defeat, but vowed to keep an eye on Foxworth.

“The promises made by Marion Foxworth will not go unchecked,“ he said. “He will be held accountable to you the citizens, and not only to the selected few self interest groups” (sic).
