A USC student is dead after a car crash in Georgetown County.

Lance Corporal Trevor Clinton with the South Carolina Highway Patrol says witness heard the crash on New River Road, 18 miles north of Georgetown County, at 3:15 Saturday morning, but the highway patrol did not discover the crash until 6 a.m.

Georgetown County Coroner Kenny Johnson said Timothy Cox, 19, a sophomore at the University of South Carolina, who is from Murrells Inlet, died as a result of injuries he sustained in the crash.

Clinton said Cox was driving South on New River Road when he lost control of the two-door 2000 Chevrolet Camaro he was driving, ran off the road, hit a ditch and overturned several times.  Clinton said the car also hit several trees and Cox was thrown out of the vehicle because he was not wearing his seatbelt.

Johnson said there was also a passenger in the car that was taken to the hospital and treated for injuries.

The crash is still under investigation by the Highway Patrol.
