Election officials report turnout was high and a relatively smooth day at the polls.

Some precincts in Myrtle Beach say turnout was one of the highest ever for a non-presidential race year.

At Ocean Forest precincts 2 and 3, polling managers say turnout was nearly 50% among registered voters for the precinct, well above the usual 20-30% for an odd election year.

Election officials in Atlantic Beach and North Myrtle Beach say turnout was also above what they expected.

“We haven’t had any problems. Everybody has come in and voted. We had a few challenges. A great deal of people came out early today so we’re ahead of the game as far as regular elections,” said Stephanie Simmons, Atlantic Beach polling manager.

Juddie Bacot, North Myrtle Beach polling manager, said, “In this area you’re gonna get a lot of retirees and they all vote. Retirees vote.”

Voters News 13 spoke to in Myrtle Beach seemed to be divided among how they voted.

“I voted for John Rhodes. I think that he did a great job and I’m fully behind him,” said Susan Voltz.

“I voted for Mr. Howard. I’ve seen his signs up a lot in my neighborhood. I live on the north end, the spot where Rhodes is supposed to have a lot of support,” said Joe Swiatek.
