Georgetown County school officials are seeing mixed results as vaccinations are given at elementary schools this week.

Tamica Williams came to Waccamaw Elementary School in Pawleys Island on Thursday so she could sit with her daughter while the little girl got her H1N1 vaccination free from the school.
“I think that’s the most positive thing about it,“ said Wililams. “I could be here with her and reassure her that it’s okay, and the school’s behind her, and I think that’s a plus, too.“
The Georgetown County School District sent out more than 10,000 consent forms to parents in the county, asking if they wanted their child vaccinated. The county’s head nurse, Laura Tucker, said elementary schools got back about 3,400 of the forms.
“In no way, shape, or form do I want to get in the business of telling parents the decision they need to make for their children,“ said Tucker. “By and large, I can’t say enough about how supportive the parents have been,“ she said.
Tucker said the countywide effort is something she’s quite proud of.
“I’ve never seen anything like this,“ she said. “We did give hepatitis vaccinations in the schools a few years back, but it was not an effort of this magnitude.“
“It’s accessible and helpful for the parents and it’s protecting them, so I think it’s a good thing,“ said Wililams. “I think it helps the kids—it’s more comfortable for them. They see other kids doing it.“
