This Father’s Day was an extra special one for a north Strand family.
The family handled two life changing events very close to one another with the help of modern technology and modern medicine.
Mike Lewis is recovering from liver transplant surgery and the youngest of his three daughters got married, all of that happened in the same week.
Lewis had to rely on modern technology so he wouldn’t miss the ceremony.
He watched the wedding on a webcam from his hospital bed that was on the ledge in the church right behind the pastor.
“Every once in a while I had to readjust the screen to wipe a tear so the people couldn’t see me, and they’d say we can’t see you and I readjust.“ said Lewis.
After major surgery and a wedding, Lewis said he never felt more alive and now he can relax with his family on Father’s Day.
His joy in seeing them all together is something he can barely put into words.
“To be with those that you love is a tremendous thing and to feel so alive as you have never felt before, it’s um, you can’t out it into words, at times you just want to you know you just kind of shake and tingle over like it’s something that you never had any dealings with before, it’s just a brand new phenomenon.“ said Lewis.
Sandra Lewis said after seeing her husband receives a second chance at life because of the gift of life from an organ donor, she is grateful for this special Father’s Day.
“Our children have always been like the primary thing in our lives and so we’re just glad he’s here to be able to share this day and many more days.“ said Sandra Lewis.
Lewis’ daughters said the best part about this Father’s Day is having their dad back, better than he was before.
The Lewis family said they hope to meet the person who donated their liver.
The family said the experience has inspired all of them to be organ donors.
