SURFSIDE BEACH—Getting in shape and losing weight still tops the resolutions list for many. That’s why, to give those people a head start, local gyms were opened on New Year’s Day.

American Athletic in Surfside Beach, saw a few new members with only one thing on their minds and that was to get in shape before summer.

“Trying to lose weight and get healthy,” said newly joined gym member, Karen Clark.

It’s people like her that keep the doors open at the fitness center.

“Gona be in shape for my sister’s upcoming wedding this year,” Clark said.

Her New Year’s Day enthusiasm is pretty common, but, so are the pitfalls of doing too much too soon.

“They would do better setting smaller more manageable goals,” said Clinical Nutrition Manager, Larissa Gedney. “They won’t get as frustrated with it and then they can work up to the bigger goals as they progress.“

Clark knows it’s not easy to lose weight especially after she moved to Myrtle Beach, but summoning the will power on the first day of the year is the way to start.

“I moved down here fell too much in love with Southern cooking and got into some bad habits so I’m trying to get back into previous healthy habits trying to get back in shape lose some pounds.“
