MYRTLE BEACH – In conjunction with Military Appreciation Days at Valor Park in Market Commons on Saturday, May 30, 2009, Mercy Hospice and Palliative Care, the area’s oldest, non-profit hospice, announced today the unveiling of a new program for United States Veterans.  This program will ensure our veterans are given the honor and dignity they so richly deserve in the last chapter of their lives.

“Veterans are our American heroes,” states Deborah Harley, director of counseling and volunteer services.  “When Mercy Hospice cares for a veteran patient at the end of life, we realize that this time may be the last time to say ‘thank you’ for their service to America.  In their honor, we have created a special training program for our staff and volunteers, which will help them understand the unique issues that veterans, especially combat veterans, may experience at the end of life.”

According to a news release, in addition to special training by a United States Veterans Administration expert in hospice care, Mercy will celebrate and honor those who served with a special pinning ceremony and certificate of appreciation. Mercy will also provide ongoing support groups for families who have loved ones deployed, those taking care of an injured veteran, and those who have suffered the loss of a family member.

Mercy Hospice and Palliative Care was formed in 1981 to bring a special program of caring to patients with life-limiting illnesses and their families. Organized by the Franciscan Sisters of Mary and initially funded by both the Sisters and the Catholic Diocese of Charleston, Mercy has since provided the highest quality care to patients and their families dealing with advanced illness in Horry, Georgetown and Marion counties, the release said.

As the area’s non-profit, hometown hospice, Mercy provides services to any member of the community in need.  Donations by generous community members make this possible.
