The construction to extend the left turn lane at Carolina Forest Boulevard is finished.
The reason for the lane is to help ease the backup at the highway 501 intersection. But, despite the lane being less than one day old some drivers don’t like it.
“I’m no engineer but I would assume you need some kind of a bridge or some kind of an interchange that’s not going to work,” said Peter Dee who lives in Carolina Forest.
“Either way it still backs up traffic,” said Kathalyn d’Agostino, “It’s really frustrating, I mean we go through that traffic light four or five times a day and you just never get home.“
Drivers told News 13 that the construction to extend the left turn lane onto Highway 501 isn’t the real solution to easing the congestion. They said Horry County failed to address the real problem; a long traffic light.
They say a slow-changing traffic signal where the intersection connects to the beach route takes so long, that many drivers end up running the red light.
“Every time I go there it’s backed up I don’t know if they don’t have their lights synchronized enough,“ said Robert Lovaty.
Horry County’s Infrastructure and Regulation Committee did the extension by 275 feet with the mind set of fitting an extra 12 cars to turn on to 501.Drivers however tell News 13 that they don’t understand how that could help ease congestion when the real headache is the traffic light.
The construction project was one week ahead of schedule. Final painting will take place next week.
The project cost about $40,000.

Did any one really think that a longer lane would do anything other than give a handful of ditch diggers and flagmen a job? I do not think so. And then again, you never know. As far as I know the only synchronized lights in Horror County are set to catch cars that go the speed limit, make them stop, and keep them idling long enough to waste gas and pollute the environment unnecessarily. So law abiding citizens will be penalized and speeders will be rewarded if they drive just fast enough to beat the gauntlet of messed up lights. I hear that there is a secret new invention that could solve some of the problems. It is called a clover leaf overpass, but the word is that they are too easy to build, are too inexpensive and do not create nearly as many jobs as the type of bridges that folks, round hear like to build. Also they get money from the government for each intersection with traffic lights, so do not expect any one to be trading in the way things have always been done for common sense any time soon. Of course there will be no money for any projects in your neighbor hood, so the best thing that you victims can do is to simply move away. Just abandon your worthless houses and move away, while you still can or just go ahead and stay here, keep suffering and get in line, put up with the nightmare and see what year any of the other previous local projects get done. I have lived here for many years and it pains me to see how some things, never change.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BoHzjkdeb1U
