An animal from the Grand Strand Humane Society tested positive for distemper.

According to a press release, one of the puppies housed at the shelter tested positive.

The shelter is waiting for the complete diagnosis and will release the information as it becomes available.

“Right now, the entire staff is putting a plan of action in motion to deal with this unfortunate situation” said Sandy Brown, Executive Director.

“We are truly heartbroken to hear these results, but we are confident that we have done everything possible to protect our animals and the community animals.”

The Grand Strand Humane Society plans to remain closed until further notice.

The shelter will not be taking in any animals from the public until it reopens. It will also be rescheduling all of its clinical appointments.

“In recent years, due to vaccinations, distemper cases have been sporadic, but because of recent reports of outbreaks in this area, it is crucial that your animals are up to date on their vaccines” said staff veterinarian Dr. Michelle Crull. “Illnesses like distemper can at any time enter a shelter environment and I am extremely proud of how this staff immediately recognized and reacted to the first signs of illness.”

More information will be provided as it becomes available and a press conference with Sandy Brown, Executive Director and Dr. Michelle Crull, Staff Veterinarian will be held outside the shelter at noon.

The Grand Strand Humane Society takes in animals brought in by the City of Myrtle Beach Animal Control as well as those brought into the shelter by members of the community. The Society is committed to providing excellent guest service to its visitors as well as the best care possible for the animals in the community.
