Ron Wofford spent time this week setting up a new set of nine holes at Georgetown’s East Bay Park.

But it’s not regular golf he’s interested in this week.

It’s disc golf.

“it’s a nice area, so that’s why we set it up here,“ said Wofford, who works for Georgetown County’s recreation department.

This weekend, Wofford hopes disc golf enthusiasts from all around will descend on the city to play a couple of rounds, and learn more about how the county wants to expand to include courses at other parks, also.  The idea is to draw more visitors to an area that Woffford feels is all too often forgotten.

“Georgetown County’s kind of stuck between Charleston and Myrtle Beach,“ he said. “It’s a great place to visit, and at the same time, do something fun while you’re here.“

Russ Argo and Tom Housner have played disc golf at East Bay Park since the current 18-hole (9 holes witih two tee boxes per hole) setup opened about a year ago.

“You get your bag, you walk right out onto the course, and you instantly start,‘ said Argo. “There’s no waiting or anything. You can always go out and have a great time,“ he said.

Housner has played for twenty years. He started when he lived on the west coast.

“This, to me, is even more fun and more entertaining than regular golf,“ Housner said.

Saturday’s event begins at 8:30 a.m. with registration, and then the first round begins at 9:30.  Participants pay $20.00 each, and have to be 16 years of age or older, said Wofford.

After a lunch break, the second round begins at 1 p.m.
