People were talking trash again Monday in Horry County. The issue of flow control was a big part of the Conway council meeting.

Council members listened to presentations from Mike Bessant, with the Solid Waste Authority and a John Abercrombie, a representative with local independent haulers over the issue of where garbage generated in the county should go.  On the agenda was a resolution for Conway council to support the adoption and implementation of a Horry County ordinance that would give the county a say in whether garbage should stay in the county.

Abercrombie told News13 the ordinance would damage his business and other like it.  Abercrombie said each municipality should take a closer look at what flow control mean for them and do what’s best for its residents. “Get a second opinion from a third party outside source, to come in and do and audit, take a look at the finances of solid waste authority, look at the engineering in solid waste authority, look at the environmental assurety of the solid waste authority just to make sure before they throw their hat in that ring, that it’s the place that it needs to be.“ Abercrombie said.

Bessant said the Solid Waste Authority wants all the city’s to continue to be part of it programs, like recycling, which they say is losing revenue because waste is leaving the County.  “It’ll ensure that they have a say in their disposal needs, they have people on the board of directors, they have input into how the solid waste authority is run, what their fees are, what programs they offer or do not offer.“ Bessant said.

Council members voted to table the issue for two weeks until both sides get a chance to sit down with one another.

And they will have that chance Tuesday at 6:30 p.m..  Bessant said the Solid Waste Authority invited all 225 of its customers to come and talk about how they can support programs, like recycling, and give the haulers what they want.  The meeting will be held at the solid waste authority’s facility on S.C. Highway 90 and it is open to the public.
