CHARLESTON (AP) - It appears incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Henry Brown has primary opposition next year in South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District.
Republican Carroll Campbell III is expected to formally announce his candidacy for the seat in the coastal district on Wednesday.
Campbell has said he is raising money and is considering a bid.
He plans announcements in Mount Pleasant, Georgetown and Myrtle Beach.
Campbell’s father, the late Carroll Campbell, served South Carolina for two terms as governor and helped create the modern Republican Party in the state.
The elder Campbell also served four terms in Congress from the Upstate before becoming governor.
