Atlantic Beach Town Council wants mayor removed from office

Retha Pierce in Marion County Magistrate Court last week.
Members of the Atlantic Beach Town Council voted Tuesday night to remove Mayor Retha Pierce. In a special meeting, council agreed to send a resolution to Gov. Mark Sanford requesting that he remove Mayor Pierce from office. Only the Governor can remove an elected official.
Tuesday night’s request comes after Mayor Pierce was arrested last week for D.U.I in Marion County. That arrest was just the most recent of several run-ins she’s had with the law during the past couple of years.
Former Councilman John Skeeters says Mayor Pierce’s situation brings embarrassment to Atlantic Beach and that’s why he thinks this resolution came up in the first place.
