Chesterfield school board extends Williams’ contract
The Chesterfield County School Board voted unanimously Monday night to extend the contract of Superintendent Dr. John E. Williams through June 30, 2012, with board member Linda Frasier absent from the meeting.
“I’m pleased to announce Dr. Williams scored the highest rating of his tenure as superintendent this year,” said Board Chairman Chad Vick.
“This evaluation is a reflection of Dr Williams’ progress as superintendent, as well as the direction of our school district as a whole. Our district continues to show positive educational advancements despite the negative financial economy. We commend Dr. Williams for a job well done.“
Based on the board’s positive evaluation between “Very Competent” and “Outstanding,” the school board also voted 8-0 to maintain Williams’ current salary of $132,500.
Williams resides in Darlington County near Hartsville.
Lamar Firemen to present Haunted Hills of Lynches River
The Haunted Hills of Lynches River opens its eighth consecutive year with a brand new haunted house Oct. 23. The house is located at the intersection of Joye Road and East Lynches River Road in Lamar.
The Lamar Fireman’s Association, sponsors of the event, assembled the best craftsmen in the area to build a new haunted house.
“Members of the fire department and the community volunteers dedicated months of their time and effort to make this new haunted house the best one yet,” said James G. Money, director of Darlington County Tourism.
This year’s Haunted Hills of Lynches River event includes a 2-mile hay ride through the swamps and woods near Lynches River. The trail, full of frightful scenes, will lie awaiting fresh victims. Half way through the hay ride the crowd will have the opportunity to tour the new haunted house before venturing back through the Haunted Hills.
This year’s haunted house will be open Oct. 23 -25 and Oct. 29-31 with hay rides beginning at dark. Tickets may be purchased at the gate the nights of the event for $5. Tickets will be sold until 9 p.m. on weeknights and 11p.m. on the weekends.
Concession stands are available before and after the hayride. All proceeds go to the Lamar Fireman’s Association.

Coker College Helps Create State Social Work Consortium
Coker College’s Department of Social Work has partnered with the South Carolina Department of Social Services (DSS) and six other colleges and universities in the state to create the South Carolina Professional Development Consortium. The consortium is working to increase the number of credentialed social workers in child protective services and foster care units across the state.
As part of its state-wide efforts, the consortium has awarded two Coker College senior social work majors $15,000 each to complete internships for DSS. Gertrude Stoney of Camden is working with foster care supervisors in Marion County, and Sarah Gerrald of Mullins is working with case managers in Darlington County. The internships are for three semesters.
The Consortium has also provided Coker College’s social work department with additional funding for program expenses, supplements for faculty, and the hiring of a new professor. That new position was filled by Dr. Elaine Townsend, visiting assistant professor of social work, this fall.
Townsend has served as the program and clinical director at a child advocacy and assessment center in Jonesboro, Ga., and as a social worker at a psychiatric institute in Columbia. Townsend holds a Ph.D. in social work from the University of South Carolina.
The South Carolina Professional Development Consortium is comprised of Coker College, the University of South Carolina, South Carolina State University, Winthrop University, Benedict College, Limestone College and Columbia College.
