Recently, 1,850 of the state’s outstanding high school seniors were awarded the Palmetto Fellows Scholarship for their freshman year 2009-10. The students will be awarded up to $6,700 during their first year to attend a South Carolina college or university. Students who maintain eligibility will then receive up to $7,500 for their second, third and fourth years of higher education. Students who pursue a degree in math or science are eligible for additional funds up to $10,000 per year, following their freshman year.

The program in its 21st year stems from the Cutting Edge Legislation of 1988 and received additional funds through the S.C. Children First Financial Resources Act of 1996.

To earn the Palmetto Fellows Scholarship, students must score at least 1200 on the SAT or 27 on the ACT, earn a minimum 3.5 GPA and rank in the top six percent of their class, or students must score at least a 1400 on the SAT or 32 on the ACT and earn a 4.0 GPA.
