Brian Terrell Brock
Brian Terrell Brock, 28, died on July 29, 2008 in Jacksonville, Fla. He was the son of Wayne and Emma Brock of Marion and was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, being part of the Sunday School and an usher.
Mr. Brock graduated from Marion School District 1 and later attended Allen University. He was the brother of Chester Smith, William Brock, Trayvis Brock and Shenelle Gerald and is survived by his sons, Shamar DeBerry, Israel and Jamiere Brock.
A memorial service was on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008 in the Jackson & McGill Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. H.K. Phillips, eulogist.
Maratha Rogers
Maratha Buddy Rogers, 89, born Feb. 6, 1919 in Norristown, Penn., to the late Ralph and Dosha Moody Rogers, had funeral services at Mt. Zion AME Church in Zion on July 29, 2008. Jackson & McGill served the family.
Mr. Rogers was the widower of the late Dorothy Alister Rogers and the father of the late William and Timothy Rogers and Bobby Jean Ford. He was a member of Mt. Zion AME Church, Zion.
His surviving daughters are Debra Harley, Freda Brand, Annie Bell Finklea, Dorothy Mae Harvey of Levittown, Penn., Louise Winston of Chesapeake, Va., Linda Mann of Levittown, Penn., Margaret and Janette Walker.
His surviving sons are Buddy L., Henry L., Leverne, Maratha G. and John P. Rogers of Philadelphia, Penn. He was also the brother of Mary Davis of Philadelphia and Carrie Bell Williams and Lillie Jane Anderson. He had 70 grandchildren, 95 great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren
Arthur L. Staggers
Arthur L. Staggers, 59, died Tuesday, July 29, 2008 in his home. Born in New Haven, Conn., to the late Arthur and Margaret Staggers, he was the companion of Dorothy Drayton.
His daughter Tanya of New Haven survives him. He was the brother of Olivia Graham, Tina Moore of Guilford, Conn., Laurie Smith of Latta, Kevin of Lexington, Warren of Raleigh, N.C., Gary and Ronald Staggers. He was employed by Atlantic Shutters of Latta.
A funeral was on Friday, Aug. 1, 2008 in the Jackson & McGill Memorial Chapel, with interment at Jackson & Daughters Cemetery.
Alfonso Williams
Alfonso “Fonz” Williams, 52, died on Sunday, July 27, 2008 in the Marion County Medical Center. He was born in Philadelphia to Willie Williams and Lorraine Jackson and was a member of St. John AME Church of Marion. He later attended Bethel AME Church after moving to Britton’s Neck.
He was employed by White’s Printing Company of Marion and was the brother of Lolita Vaughan of Philadelphia, Penn.
His companion Ave Maria Williams and son Kerry of Alexandria, Va., survive him. A funeral was on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2008 in Bethel AME Church of Britton’s Neck, with interment at Devotion Gardens of Marion. Jackson & McGill served the family.
Robert Jeffery ‘Jeff’ Capps
Retired U.S. Army CW3 Robert Jeffery “Jeff” Capps died on Aug. 1, 2008. A memorial service for him was on Tuesday, Aug. 5 in Dunbar Funeral Home, Columbia, Devine Street Chapel.
Fredrena Crawford
A wake for Fredrena Crawford, 96, who was born on Sept. 18, 1911, to the late Armstrong and Mamie Howard and who was the widow of the late Raymond Crawford and the mother of the late Raymond Crawford Jr., was on Aug. 3, 2008 at the Jackson & McGill Funeral Home.
She joined the New Life Holiness Church at an early age, where she served on the Senior Choir and the Missionary Society. She was a member of the W&S Tent # 6 and the Morning Star Chapter #256 of the Order of the Eastern Star. She is survived by her children, Minnie Mills of Stamford, Conn., Dorothy White, Mary of Florence, Mamie Cooper of Greenville, N.C., John T., Beulah Kenion of Hamden, Conn., and Roselind Pee of Mullins. She was the sister of Loupenn Williamson, Ruth Godbolt, Thelma Williams, Mary Sue Williams, Lelia Cunningham, Roosevelt and Eugene Howard. She was also the grandmother of 21, the great grandmother of 43, and the great-great grandmother of 20.
A funeral was also on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008, in the New Life Household of Faith Church, with interment at the New Graveyard Cemetery.
Marie Reid
Marie Johnson Reid, 69, died Tuesday, July 29, 2008 in her home. She was a member of Greater Singletary AME Church and retired from service at the Mullins Nursing Center in 2002. She was the sister of Gladys Reid of New York, N.Y., Clara May Smith of New York, Annie Ruth Sanders, Corrine Sanders and Catherine Moody.
She is survived by her children and their families, Eric Johnson of New York, N.Y., Paul Johnson of Connecticut, Lonzie Reid Jr. of Charlotte, Debora Crawford, Delores Totten, Diane Tisdale and Donna McGill.
M. Howard Thomas Jr.
M. Howard Thomas Jr., Ph.D., of Thomas Road, Mullins, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008 in Marion County Medical Center after a lengthy illness. Born Oct. 1, 1935, he was the son of the late Howard and Betty Wallace Thomas of Mullins and was married to Carolyn Baxley Thomas for 53 years.
Dr.Thomas was a graduate of Clemson University with a bachelor’s and master’s of science degree in plant pathology. He received his doctorate from North Carolina State University in the same field. Upon graduation from N.C. State, he began a career as a plant pathologist specialist with Union Carbide in New York.
In later years, he performed the same duties at Syngenta in Atlanta. Upon retirement, he served as a consultant and researcher for various companies and recently taught chemistry at Pee Dee Academy, where he had served on the Board of Directors. In the 1970s Dr. Thomas served as a founding member of the Board of Colonial State Bank in Marion. Before joining First Baptist Church in Mullins, where he taught the Men’s Bible Class, he was a faithful member of Reedy Creek Baptist Church in Rains, where he served as deacon.
Surviving Dr. Thomas, in addition to his wife, are his three sons and their wives, Ken and Karen Johnson Thomas of Marion, Glenn and Sheila Rasberry Thomas of Spartanburg and Brian and Reine Pickering Thomas of Greer; his grandchildren, Kevin and Korey Thomas, Matthew and Kaley Thomas and Ashlyn and Britton Thomas; and a sister, Hallie Anderson of Nichols.
Services for Dr. Thomas were conducted at 11 a.m. on Aug. 6 in Reedy Creek Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jim Kirkland, the Rev. Darrell Floyd and Dr. David Bult officiating. Interment followed in Reedy Creek Cemetery.

Annie V. Williams
Annie Valentine Williams, 73, died on July 30, 2008 in the McLeod Regional Medical Center of Florence. She was born in Warrenton, N.C., to the late Eddie and Annie Valentine and was the wife of James Williams for 48 years.
Mrs. Williams lived in Scotch Plains, N.J., and moved to Marion with her husband recently. She was employed by Western Electric for many years and retired from service at Johnson & Johnson and Ethicon Pharmaceuticals. She is survived by her husband and three children, Jewel Barthé-Williams and Juliette Johnson both of Plainfield, N.J., and James Quadré Williams of Union, N.J. She was the sister of Jonathan Valentine of Manson, N.C., and the grandmother of three. She leaves special friends in Bettye Mathis of Atlanta and Bernice Hawkins of Plainfield, N.J. A wake was on Monday, Aug. 4, 2008 in Jackson & McGill Funeral Home and her funeral was on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2008 in St. James AME Church of Ariel’s Crossroads, with interment at the church cemetery.
