McLeod-Dillon radiology offering digital mammographies

Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer diagnosed. According to the South Carolina Cancer Facts and Figures (2004-2005), breast cancer is the second most common cancer diagnosed in women (32 percent) and is the second leading cause of death among women in the state.

Dillon is the number one county for the number of deaths from breast cancer. In South Carolina, more African-American women die each year of breast cancer than any other cancer. It is estimated that one in seven American women born today will be diagnosed with the disease at some time in their lives, according to the National Cancer Institute, based on current rates. However, the overall breast cancer death rate has dropped steadily since the early 1990’s, largely due to the detection of breast cancer at earlier and more treatable stages.

Mammography is one of the most important techniques that doctors use to detect breast cancer. A large benefit of a mammogram is its ability to detect problem areas even before they can be felt in a breast self-exam. Finding breast cancer earlier means much lower levels of lymph node involvement, and that more women being treated for cancer are eligible for breast conservation.

A new technique in breast imaging technology is digital mammography. While standard film mammography creates an image directly on film, digital mammography takes an electronic image and stores it directly in a computer. McLeod Health has installed digital mammography at McLeod Dillon, the first technology of its kind for Dillon County.

Digital mammography holds many benefits. The images captured by a digital system are extremely clear and detailed with improved contrast. While standard film mammography creates an image directly on film, digital mammography takes an electronic image and stores it directly in a computer.

Digital imaging also reduces patient waiting time and administers a lower radiation dose. In addition, Radiologists can use computer software to help interpret digital mammograms.
