Betty H. Small

Laurinburg, N.C. - Mrs. Betty Huggins Small, 59, wife of Steve Small and formerly of Marion, died Saturday, July 18, 2009 in her home in Laurinburg after an extended illness.
She was born February 28, 1950 in Marion, a daughter of the late Liston Huggins and the Daisy Belle Cooper Huggins Campbell. Betty was a homemaker.
Surviving Betty in addition to her husband of the home are a son, Steven Small and his wife Katherine of Little River, 2 daughters, Ashley Cline and her husband Phillip of Laurinburg, N.C., Amy Cox and her husband Bobby of Lumberton, N.C., her grandchildren, HaLeigh Small, Ethan Cox, Avery Cox, Olivia Cox, Braden Cline and Brylie Cline, 2 brothers, Bill Huggins and his wife Nancy of Columbia and Willie Huggins and his wife Jaxie of Marion, a sister, Jewell Harrelson and her husband Henry of Sumter, and a sister-in-law, Faye Huggins.
Funeral Services were at 11 a.m. Monday, July 20 at the Marion Church of God in Marion. Burial followed in Red Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery, directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home of Mullins.
Memorials may be made to Faith Christian Center, 1030 McColl Rd., Laurinburg, N.C. 28352.

Jeffrey L. Cook

Marion – Jeffrey Lynn Cook, 48, husband of Chandra Cook, died Sunday, July 19, 2009 in his home after an illness.
Jeff was born June 6, 1961 in Florence, a son of the late R. B. and Flora Woodberry Cook.
Surviving Jeff in addition to his wife of the home are his children, Taylor Godbold, Summer Rothwell and Andrew Cook, 2 brother, Ricky Cool of Marion, Tim Cook, and his wife Nancy of Mullins, a sister, Connie Wells and her husband Orson of Hemingway, several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, and his good friend, his dog, Samson.
Funeral services were at 5 p.m. Monday, July 20 at the Chapel of Cox-Collins Funeral of Mullins, with the Rev. Benning Long officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Jeffrey Cook memorial fund, c/o Cox-Collins Funeral Home. P.O. Box 613, Mullins, 29574.

Robert “Bob” O’Neil, Sr.

Johnsonville – Robert “Bob” O’Neil, Sr., 80, died Sunday, July 19, 2009 in a Florence hospital.
Mr. O’Neil was born in Smithfield Flats, NY, a son of the late Edward and Marjorie Temple O’Neil. He was a retired carpenter, a member of the Merchant Marines and a member of the Kingsburg Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Leota Nettles O’Neil of the home, children, Gene (Brenda) O’Neil of Port St. Lucie, FL., and Peggy (Tony) Carver of Sherrills Ford, NC., step-daughters, Aretus (Mike) Jones of Myrtle Beach, Nanette (Levon) Jowers and Chris (Tracy) Powell both of Johnsonville, brothers. Elmer (Bobby) O’Neil of Richmond, VA., and Freddie (Mary Jane) O’Neil of Gresham, sister, Sandra O. Babauta of Jensen Beach, FL., 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
Mr. O’Neil was predeceased by two sons, David O’Neil and Robert “Bobby” O’Neil, Jr. Funeral services were at 4 p.m., Wednesday, July 22, 2009 in the Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Hemingway. Burial followed at Power-Durant Cemetery, directed by Morris Funeral Home, Inc. 

Sarah R. Hammond
Nichols – Mrs. Sarah Margaret Rogers Hammond, 87, widow of Manning J. Hammond, died Tuesday, July 21, 2009 in McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness.
She was born November 14, 1921 in Marion County, a daughter of the late W. Duncan and Rose Collins Rogers. Mrs. Hammond was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
Surviving Mrs. Hammond are 9 nephews and nieces, and 16 great nephews and Great nieces.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Friday, July 24 at the Chapel of Cox-Collins Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Harrelson officiating. Burial followed in Cedardale Cemetery.

W. Kenneth McDonald
Mullins - Surrounded by his loving family, Walter Kenneth McDonald, 73, was called home by his Lord on July 22, 2009.
Mr. McDonald has recently retired from 22 years of service to the City of Mullins, as a former City Council member and Mayor. Mr. Mc Donald was   the eldest son of the late Walter and Pauline Rogers McDonald of Latta, He was preceded in death by his first wife Ruby Lois McInnis McDonald, infant son, Michael Neal McDonald, and a brother, Bill McDonald. He was a faithful member of Mullins First Baptist Church and Men’s Bible Class.
Born May 17, 1936 in Latta, Mr. McDonald relocated to Mullins in 1955. After serving in the US Army, he worked as a department manager for the Thriftway Supermarket, a grocery store he later co-owned and operated as S&M Thriftway until 1986, when he and his beloved wife Ann purchased the now well known Webster Manor. Mr. McDonald was a former licensed real state and insurance agent, past Rotary Club president and served on the Board of Directors of the Mullins Chamber of Commerce
Mr. McDonald is survived by his wife and 5 children, Chuck (Donna) Brown, Eddie (Dianne) McDonald, Vanessa (Rodney) Cox, William (Pattie) Brown, and Missy (Keith) White, 9 grandchildren, Nick McDonald, Courtney Cox, Maegan Cox, Josh Brown, Kent McDonald, Delaney Brown, Austin White, Noah Brown, and Landon White, 1 great-grandchild, Jack McCann Cox., a sister, Jimmie Faye Moody, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were at Mullins First Baptist Church at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Jim Kirkland and Dr. Kenneth Orbeck officiating. Burial followed in Devotions Gardens Cemetery, directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home.

Mattie Davis

Britton’s Neck – Mattie Bell Moore Davis was born 10 February 1927 in Marion County to the late McRoy and Martha W. Moore. On Thursday, 4 November 1948, Mattie Bell Moore married the late Bernie Davis, Jr. and they were the parents of Arlene Graves, Sandra Dennison, Levant Davis, Julius Davis, and McMillan Davis all of Britton’s Neck.  She attended the public schools of Marion County.  At an early age, she became a Christian, and joined Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, and a choir member.  The soft-spoken matriarch of the Davis family was celebrated on Wednesday, 15 July 2009 at Bethel, with Rev. James Gause officiating, and Pastor R.L. Brown, eulogist. Interment was at the Beachfield Cemetery.  She is survived by her brothers Benchon Moore of Britton’s Neck, Graham Moore of Philadelphia, and her sister Alice Dozier of Philadelphia.

Mae Bell Davis

Rains – Evangelist Mae Bell Johnson Davis, 64, died on Friday, 10 July 2009 at the McLeod Regional Medical Center of Florence.  She was the daughter of the late Rev. Freeman and Celia Mae McGill Johnson.  A 1966 graduate of Palmetto High School of Mullins, she later attended the L.B. Burgess School of Religion at Florence.  Her first ordination was from the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church.  She was the wife of Rev. John Kelly Davis.  A funeral was directed by Jackson & McGill on Thursday, 16 July 2009 at Bethlehem AME Church, with Pastor Leo Woodberry officiating.  Interment was at the New Graveyard Cemetery.  She is survived by her sister Roxie Johnson of Mullins, and her brothers Jack Johnson of Florida, and Rev. Raymond Johnson of Mullins.

 

China Bacchus

Britton’s Neck – China Mae Bacchus, 66, died on Friday, 10 July 2009 at her home.  She was the daughter of the late John and Ida Woodberry.  She was the sister of Nazann Self, Major Woodberry, Willie Woodberry, and Ernell Woodberry.  After accepting Christ as her personal savior, she joined the Red Hill Missionary Baptist Church, where a funeral was directed by Jackson & McGill on Friday, 17 July 2009, with Rev. Montele Burton presiding, and Rev. Ernell Woodberry, eulogist.  Interment was at old Neck Cemetery.  As a member of Red Hill, she served as the president of the Junior Choir, a member of the Senior Choir, president of the Usher Board, president of the Pastor’ Aide, and a member of the Missionary Society.  She was also involved with the Britton’s Neck Community Choir, and president of the South Carolina Woman to Woman Organization.  At an early age, she moved to Brooklyn, there meeting and marrying Graham Bacchus.  After returning to Marion County, she was employed with Heritage Sportswear, Anvil, and Russell Stover Candies.  She is survived by her children Victoria Jones and Anthony Bacchus both of Britton’s Neck, and stepchildren Desi and Rochell Bacchus both of Brooklyn.
