John Harvey Holt
Mullins – John Harvey Holt, 83, passed away Wednesday, July 15, 2009 in his home surrounded by his loving family.
Mr. Holt was born in Marion County, son of the late Harvey and Mary Anna McCallum Holt. He, along with his father and brother, co-owned and operated Holt Motor Company for over 50 years. He was a member of the Mullins Lions Club for the past 55 years where he served as a past President and had received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award. For over 50 years, he was a Mason with the Little Pee Dee Lodge No. 83.
Mr. Holt was a past President of the Mullins Chamber of Commerce, and a WWII veteran. He had been a member of IPTAY since 1976, and was a representative for the Marion County area. He was also a faithful member of the Mullins First Baptist Church where he served in several capacities over the years and the Men’s Bible Class.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ruth H. Holt, one brother, Hoyt L. Holt (Avis) of Mullins, two sisters, Catherine Shine of Latta, and Bobbie Cook of Lake View, and ten nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services were at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 18, 2009 at Mullins First Baptist Church. Burial followed at Riverside Cemetery in Nichols.

Samuel A. Thornton
Mullins – Samuel Alex Thornton, 32, died Monday, July 13, 2009.
He was born May 31, 1977 in Chesterfield, a son of Clifford and Connie Kamberis Thornton. Sam was employed in the maintenance department of SOPAKCO. He was a US Marine Corps veteran, having served in Afghanistan. Sam was an avid hunter, fisherman and loved everything to do with the outdoors. He was a member of Wildlife Action. Sam was a member of Mullins First Baptist Church.
Surviving Sam are his wife, Amber Rogers Thornton of Mullins, his parents, Clifford and Connie Kamberis Thornton of Chesterfield, 2 brothers, Drew Thornton of Red Hook, N.Y., and Jason Thornton of Orlando, Fl., his mother-in-law, Patricia Rogers of Mullins, sister-in-law, Angie Dean and her husband Johnson of Mullins, a niece and nephew, Payton and Weston Dean, and his good friend, his dog, Sable.
Memorial services were at 4 p.m. Friday, July 17 at the Chapel of Cox-Collins Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jim Kirkland officiating.

Herbert Earnest Lane
Nichols – Herbert Earnest Lane, 66, died Wednesday, July 15, 2009 in McLeod Hospice House after an illness. Graveside services were at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 18, at Old Ebenezer Cemetery, directed by Richardson Funeral Home.
Mr. Lane was born in Mullins, a son of the late Lloyd and Margie Kendall Lane. He was a retired from Merita Bakery Company. Surviving are his sons, Greg Lane of Nichols and Kerry Lane of Greensville, and a sister, Barbara Brown and her husband Maxcey, of Mullins.

Buena C. Alford
Britton’s Neck – Mrs. Buena Cockfield Alford, 88, widow of Paul Alford, died Tuesday, July 7, 2009 in Greenville.
She was born November 27, 1920 in Florence County, a daughter of the late Samuel and Annie Hannah Cockfield. Mrs. Alford was a homemaker and a member of the Eastern Star. She was a member of the Ladies Missionary Society.
Surviving Mrs. Alford are 3 daughters, Paulette Summerford and her husband Harold of St. Petersburg, Florida, Dianne Allen of Lakeland, Florida, and Bea Turner of Greenville, her grandchildren, Allen Summerford, Karen S. Melhem, and Margaret T. Norris, 8 great grandchildren, and a sister, Lillian C. Grey of Florence.
Funeral Services were at 11 a.m. Friday, July 10 at Central United Methodist Church in Britton’s Neck, with the Rev. Virgil Seaber officiating. Burial followed in Old Neck Cemetery, directed by Smith-Collins Funeral Home of Marion.

Shirley N. Allen
Shirley N. Allen, 56, died Saturday, July 11, 2009 in Marion County Medical Center after an illness. Funeral Services were held at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 15, at Mullins- Marion Freewill Baptist Church. Burial followed at Palmetto Memorial Gardens, directed by Richardson Funeral Home.
Mrs. Allen was born in Marion County, a daughter of Inez Stephens Norris, of Marion and the late Johnny Milton Norris. She was also predeceased by a brother, Johnny Norris. Mrs. Allen was an LPN for over 30 years and was a member of Mullins-Marion Freewill Baptist Church.
Surviving are her son, Stephen Nicholas Thomas of Colorado Springs, CO, daughters Karen Christine Woodell and Mellisa Dawn Johnson, both of Marion, brother, Jack Norris of Seneca, SC, sisters Frankie Jean Caulder of Marion and Hope McClam of Colorado, Springs, CO, two grandchildren, William Shane Johnson and Jazmine Mariah Thomas, as well as special friends Crystal McArthur and Judy Lewis.
Harvey Johnson, Jr.
Marion – Harvey Johnson, Jr., 71, died on Monday, 6 July 2009 at the McLeod Regional Medical Center at Florence. The late Harvey and Rosa Lee Johnson were his parents, and he was the widower of Loris Jean Johnson. After service in the military, he relocated to Ocean City, NJ. He was a member of the Mt. Olive Seventh Day Adventist Church in Marion, where a funeral was directed by Jackson & McGill on Friday, 10 July 2009, with Pastor Marquis Jackson presiding. Interment was at Devotion Gardens. He is survived by: his daughter Rosa Lee Bethea of Marion; step-daughter Eloris Graves of New Jersey; sons Harvey Lee Johnson of Scranton, PA, Leon Brown of Egg Harbor, NJ, Charles Rollins of Marion, and Harry Brantley of Hopewell, VA; and his sister Ruth Shuman of Savannah.
Steven Wayne Branham
Ariel’s Crossroads – A memorial service for the late Steven Wayne Branham, 41, was held on Friday, 10 July 2009 at the Jackson & McGill Memorial Chapel in Marion, and interment was at the St. James AME Church Cemetery. He was born in Richmond to Trophelia Reed Hall and the late Hazel Branham. He was the brother of Jerolyn Christie, Nona Branham, Keith Branham, and Tyrone Calhoun. He was educated in the public schools of Omaha, Nebraska. Very athletic, he excelled in wrestling and gymnastics in high school. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Airway Science and Business Administration from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. He joined the Muslim community on the 1990’s , and continued to practice the faith until his death. An employee with Mittal Steel of Georgetown, he also owned a lawn service business. Surviving are his sons Deonte, Elijah, Adrian, and Myles. He died on Independence Day.
Eunice Legette
Zion – Eunice Brigman Legette loved gardening and sharing her knowledge about herbs and home remedies. She was born 29 May 1913 to the late T.C. and Lizzie Brigman. She was a longtime and faithful member of Mt. Zion AME Church, where a funeral was directed by Jackson & McGill on Saturday, 11 July 2009, with Pastor Robert D. Hunter presiding. Interment was at Smith Cemetery at Smithboro. She was the widow of Calvin Willie Legette, and they were the parents of Marie Glover, Magalene Jenkins, and Isaiah Legette all of Marion, Willie and Hiawatha Legette both of New Jersey, Maceo “Pap” Legette of Washington DC, and Benjamin Legette of Charlotte, and the late Jonathan Legette.
Thelma Moody
Marion – Thelma Campbell Moody was born 9 October 1924 in North Carolina. She was the widow of Hoyt Moody, Sr., and they were the parents of Hoyt, Jr., Robert, and Richard Moody, all of Marion, and the late Liston Moody. She was a member of the Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where a funeral was directed by Jackson & McGill on Sunday, 12 July 2009, with Minister Justin gamble presiding and Pastor A.C. Robinson, eulogist. Interment was at the church cemetery.
