Hartsville High hosted a three-way meet at Kelleytown Stadium Tuesday on a brand new 5K (3.1 mile) course. Participants included Hartsville, Sumter High and the Governor’s School (GSSM).
For the boys, Sumter came out ahead with 23, Hartsville 42 and GSSM 68. Hartsville runners Allen Ownley came in third in a time of 19:29, Justin Steeves in fourth in a time of 20:07 and Drew McElveen in sixth in a time of 20:35.
“It was very hot, and the runners were on a brand new course out at Kelleytown Stadium,” Coach Buster Freeman said. “We’re pleased with the progress of our young runners and the leadership being shown by the returners so far.”
The girls couldn’t fill out a complete team, but Hartsville runner Erin Farrell did finish seventh overall in a time of 27:21.
“Our girls ran hard, but, due to several participating for the swim team, we didn’t have enough girls to fill out a complete team,” said Freeman.
The next meet will be Saturday in Columbia at the Coaches Classic at Sandhill’s Research Park.
