County to have Relay for Life this weekend
Published: April 29, 2009
The Marion County Relay for Life will be this weekend. Since earlier this year, teams have been raising money for the American Cancer Society.
The relay will start at 6 p.m. with a survivor’s lap soon after and a luminary ceremony beginning at 9 p.m. Walkers be out all night, honoring survivors of and those fighting cancer and remembering those who have lost their battle with the disease.
Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature activity. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Relays are an overnight event and can be as many 24 hours in length and are conducted throughout the year in communities accross the country.
This year’s Marion County theme for the Relay for Life centers around “Nursery Rhymes.“ There will be foods and activities for children and adults, the organizers say. Organizers also encourage the public to come to enjoy “an exciting night of entertainment with Morris and Nikki Ward, the Marion Baptist Men’s Quartet, the 50’s Forever, the Marion County Mass Choir, just to name a few…“ In addition to the music, singing and dancing, there will be a womanless beauty pageant and more.
Local teams will compete against each other for best camp site, best use of theme, and more to earn Spirit Points.
All Marion County Cancer Survivors and one care giver are invited to attend a Survivors’ Celebration Dinner at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, 1333 Penderboro Road, Marion, on April 30. The dinner begins at 6 p.m. and invitations have been sent to those survivors the Relay for Life committee have on record.
Anyone planning to go should RSVP by the end of today. If a survivor didn’t receive an invitation, contact Mary Ann Corley of Mullins.
Lumaries offer an opportunity to make a special gift in honor or in memory of a loved one. Luminarias outline the track at the Relay for Life and will be lit in memory or in honor of loved ones and friends who have had cancer. Luminarias may be purchased for $10 each on-line at http://www.relayforlife.org/marioncountysc .
