Men’s Soccer
Three second half goals, including the game winner by Marc Mergena with just 33 seconds remaining in the game, gave the Cobra men’s soccer team a 3-2 victory over Belmont Abbey in Conference Carolinas soccer Saturday afternoon. The win improves the regionally ranked No. 5 Cobras to 9-2-2 overall, and 3-2-1 in conference play, while the Abbey falls to 5-6-1 overall, and 3-5 in the conference.
Things got heated over the final minutes of play, as both teams picked up the intensity, but it was Coker that was able to get the upper hand. Eric Stiefield (Eustis, Fla.) chipped the Abbey keeper with less than a minute left and Mergena (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) followed the shot and was able to tap it over the goal line with just 33 seconds remaining, giving the Cobras the eventual 3-2 win.
It was a hard fought match with more than 21 fouls and six cards issued throughout the match.
Women’s Soccer
Belmont Abbey rolled past Coker College with a 12-0 win in women’s collegiate soccer on Saturday afternoon. The Crusaders’ Alana Ryczek and Connie Axiotis each had a hat trick as they handed the Lady Cobras their worst loss in school history.
The loss continues Coker’s losing season, dropping the Lady cobras to 0-12 overall and 0-10 in Conference Carolinas play, while the Crusaders improve to 8-3 overall and 7-1 in the conference.
Coker goalkeeper Carrie Hudnell (Goose Creek) had seven saves in the match.
Volleyball
The Coker volleyball team took another hard loss on Saturday afternoon in Conference Carolinas volleyball, falling 3-1 to Queens University of Charlotte. The Lady Cobras took the first set of the match in a back and forth battle, 31-29, but was unable to get close to a win in the next three sets, losing 25-10, 25-15 and 25-16.
The Royals of Queens improve to 6-16 on the year and 2-10 in conference play, while Coker falls to 1-20 overall and 0-10 in the conference.
Cynallyhia Indriago (Columbia) led the way for the Lady Cobras with 10 kills, while April Griggs (Bishopville) and Kristin Teets (Columbia) each had six kills for Coker. Leading Coker is digs were Lisa Ross (Bowling Green, Ky.) and Molly Bookhart (Orangeburg) with nine digs apiece. Bookhart also had 25 assist on the day.
Coker returns to the court 7 p.m. today at St. Andrews.
The Coker Lady Cobras went toe-to-toe with the number one team in Conference Carolinas on Friday night, Pfeiffer University. Coker battled hard, but lost in straight sets, 3-0. In the first two matches the Lady Cobras were in the lead, but Pfeiffer battled back in each set to win. The Falcons won by scores of 25-20, 27-25 and 25-16.
The win improves the Falcons to 14-6 overall and 11-1 in the conference, while the loss drops the Lady Cobras to 1-19 overall, and 0-9 in the conference.
For the Cobras, Kristin Teets (Columbia) was the kill leader with nine kills, while Lisa Ross (Bowling Green, Ky.) and April Griggs (Bishopville) each had eight digs. Molly Bookhart had 26 assists and 10 digs, while Cynallyhia Indriago (Columbia) had 11 digs and Trisha Moore (Rock Hill) had 13 digs.
Men’s Basketball
Join the Coker Men’s Basketball team on Nov. 8 as they face the University of Pittsburgh Panthers in an exhibition game at Pittsburgh. The Cobras will take on last year’s NCAA Elite Eight Panthers at 4 p.m. and you can be a part of the action! Hop on the Cobra fan bus and travel from Coker College on Nov. 7 and stay overnight in Pittsburgh before the big game.
Trip includes motor coach transportation to and from Pittsburgh, one night accommodations, Sunday brunch with the team and a ticket to the game.
