Christmas time is here, and the Angles of Giving program is doing their part to make it a memorable holiday for children in Marion County.
Mary White, one of the leading organizers, along with Tonya McKenzie, welcomed school administrators to the Helping Hands clinic to pick up Christmas gifts for students that could use a few items for the holidays. About 40 students from Easterling Primary, Rains Centenary Early Childhood Center, North Mullins Primary, McCormick Elementary and Marion Intermediate schools received gifts, McKenzie said.
“We’re doing this through the Kiwanis Club of Marion County. We target school age children from kindergarten to sixth grade,” White said of the initiative in its third year.
The Angels of Giving program comes up with a gift list from the kids and with the help of donations are able to go out and shop for items.
“Our main goal is to help the kids that don’t get assistance from other programs and are hard hit by job loss,” McKenzie said, adding families, individuals, Helping Hands clinic volunteers, and even her Zeta Psi Beta sorority sisters contributed.
“It’s just a community thing, giving back because the kids are our future and we’re trying to be there for them,” she said.
