The Central Carolina Corvair Club will host an open classic car show on Oct. 17 at Auddie Brown Chevrolet in Darlington.
A total of 72 awards will be given in 23 classes at the show. In addition, dozens of door prizes will be given to entrants. Awards will be given to the first three cars in each class.
Auddie Brown Chevrolet is at the intersection of U.S. 52 and U.S. 52 Bypass between Florence and Darlington.
While the show will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Chevrolet Corvair, only four of the 23 classes will be for Corvairs. All years and makes of classic cars are invited to participate, although to qualify as a classic car, entries have been built before 1985.
“We want to recognize the engineering advances Chevrolet made with the Corvair,” Jerry Brown, club president said. “Although the Corvair was only made between 1960 and 1969, it was the first rear-engine American-made car, and it was supposed to be America’s answer to the German Porsche.”
Four Corvairs belonging to club members will be on display in the Auddie Brown showroom the week preceding the show.
“We have some great door prizes, including a three-day, two-night vacation for two in an oceanfront condo at Sea Mist Resort in Myrtle Beach,” show chairman Bob Bloodworth said. “Pepsi-Cola is providing their Pepsi Wagon for us to sell fountain drinks, and KJ’s IGA Supermarket on Pamplico Highway is providing hot dogs for us to sell. It’s going to be a carnival-like atmosphere.”
The show begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 4 pm. Spectators are welcome, and there is no admission fee.
Registration ends at noon, and judging begins at 12:30 p.m.
