Children’s author to sign books at Wesley
Author Lucy Nolan will be speaking, reading and signing copies of her new children’s book “Mother Osprey: Nursery Rhymes for Buoys and Gulls” in Hartsville from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at an author meet and greet in at Wesley United Methodist Church, 145 E. Hagen Collins, a senior at Lamar High School, was chosen as the winner of Darlington County School District’s annual Holiday Card Art Contest. Collins’ picture will be featured on the cover of the district’s holiday card.

Essay wins class trip to Walk With Dinosaurs for entire third grade at Carolina Elementary
Harrison Corns parlayed his writing skills and interest in science, most specifically dinosaurs, into a field trip for the entire third grade at Carolina Elementary School by winning an ETV essay contest with a grand prize of 50 tickets to see Walk With Dinosaurs at the Colonial Life Arena in Columbia last Sunday.

Palmetto Fellows Scholarship recipients announced
Recently, 1,850 of the state’s outstanding high school seniors were awarded the Palmetto Fellows Scholarship for their freshman year 2009-10. The students will be awarded up to $6,700 during their first year to attend a South Carolina college or university.

The S.C. Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) leads Palmetto State high schools with the largest number of National Merit Semifinalists. Fifteen students from the class of 2010 recently were notified of their eligibility in the National Merit Semifinalists program.

Research exchange brings German scientists to Hartsville
The S.C. Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics’ (GSSM) has embarked on a Research Exchange Scholars program with Germany, funded by research-based healthcare company Roche. The program is an expansion of the school’s nationally recognized Summer Program for Research Interns (SPRI). Three GSSM students visited Germany in June and July to conduct college-level scientific research.
