Honoring Veterans

Colonel B. F. Wingard, a long time friend of Reverend Cooper and step-father of Trinity alumna Meggie Baker, spoke about the importance of honoring the branches of military and shared some of his personal experiences to students and faculty during chapel on Nov. 9. Wingard made a lasting impression on the students by bringing to life the sacrifices of the military and the reverence for our country. He presented President XXXXX Hubbard with a new flag. Immediately following the presentation, the entire school solemnly walked out to the flag pole where our Eagle and Boy Scouts raised the new flag. After saying the Pledge of Allegiance, the flag was then lowered to half-mast in honor of the soldiers killed at Fort Hood.

Arts
As part of Trinity’s enrichment program, many students have the opportunity to participate in an art class led by highly acclaimed artist Patz Fowle. Recently Fowle’s class has been studying Romare Bearden and working on traveling art cards, which are similar to 2-D time capsules illustrated in small works of art. Students create their card using images of whatever subject area they are passionate about. They combine the images in a collage to create their traveling art cards. “These are works that make a statement,“ Fowle said. She hopes to display the students’ works of art at the Hartsville Library.

Quiz Bowl
On Nov. 11, the High School Quiz Bowl regional competition was held on Trinity’s campus. Trinity’s team (Coach Robert Blackmon, Stephen Culleton, Suzanne Ducker, Amanda Grubb, Antonio MalvaGomes, Alex Smith and Emma Griffin) did an outstanding job against their competition. Trinity beat King’s Academy 205 to 25 and Robert E. Lee 75 to 35. The Trinity team will travel to Orangeburg where they will compete in the state championships next week. Good Luck!

A Toast to Trinity
On Nov. 13, the school family came together for fellowship, fun and fine food in the lobby of the SiMT building. Bill Harwell catered the event. Cal Wheeler of Vintage Wine Boutique in Hartsville provided the fine wines. Guests were entertained by Margaret Jones and friends (Zefiro Trio) and Ed Clement’s band (Midlife Crisis). For those who couldn’t make it, it was such a success that you’ll have another opportunity next year! A special thank you to Robin Aiken, Mary Wood Beasley, Helen Fuller and Tracy Koontz for their hard work and elegant ideas!

Fall Athletics
The Titan football team finished the season 2-7. For most of this team, this was their first time ever playing football. Oliver Hubbard scored Trinity’s first ever touchdown. Blakeland Harrison had the longest run (95 yards) for a touchdown. Josh Pruett led the team in rushing yards. Rutledge Schock led the team in receptions. Jack Hoover had the most sacks. Seniors Hoover, Brian Gerwig and Gray Snowden will be participating in the Senior Bowl at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Patrick Henry.
“I’m very proud of this young team. They worked hard and dedicated themselves to being the very best they could be,“ Coach David Rector said.

College Panel Seminar
Approximately 175 people attended Trinity’s College Panel Seminar in the Sonoco gymnasium on Nov. 3. Admissions Directors from four of South Carolina’s top universities and colleges spoke at the event. Robert Barkley, director of admissions at Clemson University, Brand Stille, vice-president of enrollment at Wofford College, Jim Schlimmer, director of admissions at Francis Marion University, Perry Wilson, director of admissions at Coker College, and Tom Giddings of S.C. Students Loans presented a variety of topics related to the college admissions process. Topics covered included tips for the college application, advantages of public vs. private college/university education and student eligibility for State Scholarships and SC Grants and Loans. At the conclusion of the presentation, panelists and audience members participated in a question and answer session.
