The Almeta Davis DeBarr Endowed Scholarship Fund has been established at Benedict College in Columbia to help students who aspire to be a lawyer.

Althea DeBarr-Johnson, an attorney in Atlanta and the daughter of Davis DeBarr, established the scholarship in honor of her mother’s dedication to education.

DeBarr-Johnson said her mother has “always believed in education and instilled the love of learning in all four of her children.”

DeBarr, a Florence native, is a retired home economist with the Florence Head Start program.

To receive the award, a student must be enrolled at Benedict; be in good academic standing; have at least a cumulative grade point average of 3.0; and major in any discipline with the intent to continue at an accredited law school.
