Registering your child
Registering your child
Any child who will be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1 must enroll in a public or private kindergarten program unless the parent or legal guardian signs a waiver or chooses to home school their child under the guidelines of South Carolina law, according to the state Department of Education Web site, http://ed.sc.gov.
State law requires students to be in school from age 5 to 16.
When registering your child for the first time, you will need to bring the following items, unless otherwise specified by the district or school: A birth certificate (kindergarten and first grade only); current immunization record; social security card; and proof of residence (utility bill, phone bill, property tax receipt, etc.).
Some school districts require additional information, so parents should be sure to check with their local school district before registration time.
Fees for items such as school lunch, supplies or identification cards also may be required.
Immunization requirements
South Carolina law requires immunizations to be current before a child can enter 5-year-old kindergarten or school. Any student who has failed to receive their shots will not be permitted to attend school. Immunization is necessary for the protection of each student, class, the school and the community.
Students may be exempt from these immunization requirements for reasons such as medical contraindication, religious exemption or special exemptions
For more information on immunization requirements and exemptions, call the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control’s Immunization Division in Columbia at (803) 898-0460, 1 (800) 277-4687 (SHOTS) or online at http://www.scdhec.net.
School district policy changes
Every year school boards review district policies such as school dress and discipline codes. Make sure to read the student handbook provided at each school to see updated information on district policies.
For more information on registering your child, contact your child’s school.
Contact the following local schools for details about registration times and open houses:
