All State, Rabon Agency donate 1,500 Fire Safety coloring books
All State and the Rabon Agency donated 1,500 Fire Safety coloring books to the Hartsville Fire Department to be distributed in Hartsville area elementary schools. The Rabon Agency also donated another 2,500 of the coloring books to the Darlington County Fire District.

SC’s online education programs ranked 2nd in country
The Center for Digital Education said that its evaluation of national online learning policies had revealed significant growth in state support for implementation of online programs in K-12 education across the country. The group’s report showed that 25 states now lead online statewide initiatives, a dramatic increase from 15 states only a year ago.

The Hartsville Museum has compiled a collection of local postcards with a brief history about each one. “Postcards from the Hartsville Museum Collection” will be unveiled at the Hartsville Downtown Development Association sponsored Christmas Open House Thursday.
GSSM senior earns state’s only perfect ACT score
Millie Griffin, a senior at the S.C. Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics, has achieved a perfect score of 36 on the ACT exam. Griffin is the only S.C. student who achieved a perfect score in September’s test period.

South Carolina education officials want the state to require criminal background checks of substitute teachers in an effort to prevent child abuse.
Author luncheon Thursday at Black Creek Arts Center
Karen White will be sharing her newest novel “The Girl on Legare Street” at a luncheon on Thursday in the gallery at Black Creek Arts Center, 116 W. College Avenue. “The Girl on Legare Street” was released a few weeks ago. White will be speaking, reading and signing copies of her new book from noon until 2 p.m. Thursday.

Children’s author to sign books at Wesley
Author Lucy Nolan will be speaking, reading and signing copies of her new children’s book “Mother Osprey: Nursery Rhymes for Buoys and Gulls” in Hartsville from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at an author meet and greet in at Wesley United Methodist Church, 145 E. Hagen Collins, a senior at Lamar High School, was chosen as the winner of Darlington County School District’s annual Holiday Card Art Contest. Collins’ picture will be featured on the cover of the district’s holiday card.

Essay wins class trip to Walk With Dinosaurs for entire third grade at Carolina Elementary
Harrison Corns parlayed his writing skills and interest in science, most specifically dinosaurs, into a field trip for the entire third grade at Carolina Elementary School by winning an ETV essay contest with a grand prize of 50 tickets to see Walk With Dinosaurs at the Colonial Life Arena in Columbia last Sunday.

Palmetto Fellows Scholarship recipients announced
Recently, 1,850 of the state’s outstanding high school seniors were awarded the Palmetto Fellows Scholarship for their freshman year 2009-10. The students will be awarded up to $6,700 during their first year to attend a South Carolina college or university.

Fifteen GSSM students among National Merit Semifinalists
The S.C. Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) leads Palmetto State high schools with the largest number of National Merit Semifinalists. Fifteen students from the class of 2010 recently were notified of their eligibility in the National Merit Semifinalists program.
