COLUMN: From Where I Sit
It’s crunch time as they say, less than two weeks until my son’s wedding day.
Someone suggested I might want to try on the dress I purchased a year ago and haven’t tried on since. Someone else suggested I might want to make a hair appointment. Another suggested I might want to take some Tylenol and go back to bed.
That sounds like the best idea!
There are so many things that can’t be done until the last minute, and so many others that I put off to the last minute. I have a last-minute type of personality – why do today what I can do tomorrow.
As I got together some photos for a video of the couple, I saw what they meant about I might want to try on my dress before the last minute. The pounds have added up over the years. As for the hair, it didn’t look any better in any of the photos I saw with me in them.
I have two left hands when it comes to curling irons, rollers and such.
The ladies at work are always telling me how I should cut or fix my hair.
For the parents reading this who haven’t had a wedding, but know one will come, I’m here to tell you that there is a lot of work and planning involved in getting your children down the aisle.
I was talking to an aunt of a bride just the other day who said the mother of the bride was feeling down. That happens. You spend endless hours planning and preparing for the big day, and it is over in 30 minutes.
I just love the photos of the father of the bride with his pockets turned inside out. He’s broke; his daughter’s happy, and mom’s sad.
Why? It’s mom’s feelings that are turned inside out. The excitement over the parties, gifts, attention showered on her daughter, and her too, are gone. Chances are most moms haven’t spent so much time together with their daughters in years. It was fun. Now it is over, too.
There is a let down, a sadness born out of happiness.
I can’t image what I’ll do with all the free time.
Let’s see.
There is the Christmas Shoppe at Black Creek Arts, the Hartsville Christmas parade, the Hartsville Community Players’ production of “The Best Little Christmas Pageant Ever,” the Tour of Historic Home Museums at the Jacob Kelley House, the Hart Cottage and Kalmia Gardens, the Darlington Christmas Parade and Carol Lighting, and Good Living Marketplace at Burry Park. These are all happening in a four-day period from Dec. 4-7.
There are others. The First Presbyterian Church is having its Alternative Christmas Market on Nov. 22. I will more than likely have to miss that one. Since it is the wedding day. The First Baptist is having its Christmas Bazaar soon as are others I’m sure.
There are numerous concerts and plays in the coming weeks.
And of course, there is our recipe contest coming up soon. Thanks for all of the recipes.
Maybe I’ll have to postpone my “letdown, meltdown” until after Christmas.
From where I sit, I don’t have time.
Hopefully, by New Year’s I’ll have adjusted to the fact that my children are both married.
By then, it will be time for the after-Christmas blues.
