Annual Harry Hampton Memorial Walk to be held at Congaree National Park
Published: October 23, 2009
Rudy Mancke, professor of the Honors College at the University of South Carolina, will be leading the Harry Hampton Memorial Walk at Congaree National Park from 1:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22. This public event is held annually to recognize the conservation achievements of Harry R. E. Hampton.
Authorization of the park as a unit of the National Park Service on Oct. 18, 1976, was the culmination of years of effort by Hampton through his newspaper column, “Woods and Waters”. Hampton was joined in his efforts to establish the park by local garden clubs, concerned citizens, and conservation organizations.
The walk is limited to 70 participants, so make your reservations early by calling (803) 776-4396, ext. 0. Fall is an ideal time to visit. Dry ground and cool weather generally combine to assure a pleasant visit. Wear old sneakers and jeans, no shorts or sandals, and bring insect repellent.
