More than 2,000 Pee Dee residents are expected to take steps to improve their heart health on Saturday when they participate in the American Heart Association’s Start! Pee Dee Heart Walk at Francis Marion University.

On Friday, Oct.30, Burry Bookstore is hosting author and ghost storyteller Tally Johnson from 4 until 5:30 p.m. He will be signing copies of his new book Ghosts of the Pee Dee, and sharing some of his favorite ghost tales about the surrounding community.

Charlie Owens, owner of Charlie’s Service Center vehicle-repair shop, couldn’t help himself this spring when he went to gather up a stray cat’s kittens for a customer who agreed to adopt them – and saw one kitten, bearing an amazing 24 toes, sadly staring up at him.

In celebration of National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, SCNOW.com is starting a pet of the week feature in conjunction with the Florence Area Humane Society. Each week we will feature a different dog and cat available for the adoption at the FAHS. More than 2,000 animals each year pass through Florence Area Humane Society, many never have the chance to find a loving forever home. This week, Aggie and Marion are the featured pets up for adoption.

The Hart Cottage Guild and Hobnob Gourmet are teaming up for a holiday event on Nov. 19 at Hobnob Gourmet, 113 W. Carolina Ave. Suzanne Galloway and Vicki Hudson of Hobnob Gourmet will host an evening of fun with complimentary samples from their holiday food collection, and the Hart Cottage Guild will serve delicious samples of recipes from the Hart Cottage cookbook “Candlelight and Camellias.”  The event is part of the Hartsville Downtown Development Association (HDDA) after hours Holiday Open House. Downtown stores will be open until 9 p.m.

Author, photojournalist coming to Burry Friday

Lowcountry native Karen T. Bartlett, an author and award-winning photojournalist, will be signing copies of her new book “The Seas Islands of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida” from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Friday at Burry Bookstore.

Children’s center will hold grand opening

One in three females and one in six males in the Pee Dee region will be the victims of some type of sexual abuse. And those are the cases that are reported. It is estimated that only one-third of the actual assaults are ever reported.

The Durant Children’s Center of Hartsville will celebrate its grand opening from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday with an open house. The Center is winding up the “Plant A Seed of Hope” campaign with a strong finish but will need ongoing donations and volunteers. Thigpen will speak to voters league

The regular meeting of the Darlington County League of Women Voters will feature Dr. Neal Thigpen, retired professor of political science from Francis Marion University, at 7 p.m. Oct. 20 in the Hartsville Library Conference Room.

Florence Museum to host the Eleventh Annual Oyster Roast

The annual oyster roast, the major fundraising event to support the Florence Museum, has been set for Thursday, Nov. 5, from 6:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. Tickets are on sale now. The 11th annual event and celebration will take place on the grounds of the museum located at 558 Spruce St.

The Artisans of the South Carolina Cotton Trail will present their Second Annual SC Jazz Festival Fine Arts and Crafts Show on Saturday, Oct.17, in Cheraw.  The show will be open from 9 to 7 p.m. and will be held at the Cheraw Police Department Conference Room, 258 Second St., Cheraw.
