A fireworks shortage triggered by a storeroom fire in China could turn this Fourth of July into a dud. Some fireworks vendors and show producers are scrambling for the noisy, colorful explosives.

Derrick Wilson recognized in S.C. State Art Exhibition
Local artist Derrick Wilson receives inspiration for his paintings from his roots in South Carolina. The artist spent 10 years in New York painting before returning. He received an honorable mention in the South Carolina State Museum’s 20th Anniversary Juried Art Exhibition for his painting Head of Prestwood Lake.
From Hartsville to Africa
Third-year nursing student at the Medical University of South Carolina, Amanda Baxley of Hartsville, plans on volunteering in Africa after graduation. Baxley says she wants to work with children with AIDS. To earn the money for her trip, Baxley is making and selling earrings.

20 years of bliss (and no pepper spray)

Anonymous burial in potter’s field giving way to cremation
Had James Blake died today, his widow wouldn’t have a grave to visit. Blake’s remains are among the more than 900 bodies that inhabit Spartanburg County’s potter’s field, an expanse of grass and unmarked graves west of Croft State Natural Area.
Woman provides sanctuary to abused, neglected pigs
For 11 days, Stinky was laid low, suffering from wounds from an attack by a pit bull terrier. His owners didn’t care enough for their pot bellied pig to get him medical care.
