Coleman - Newton
Lillian Marshall Coleman and John Clarke Newton, both of Columbia, were married October 17, 2009, at the home of the bride’s grandmother in Latta. The Rev. Andrew Rivers O’Dell performed the 5 p.m. ceremony.
The bride, who was given in marriage by her father, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Dozier Coleman III of Florence. She is the granddaughter of Mrs. Martha Mack Simons of Columbia, and the late Mr. Henry Mazyck Simons, Jr., and Mrs. Bernice McIntyre Coleman of Latta, and the late Mr. John Dozier Coleman, Jr. A graduate of Wofford College with a Bachelor of Arts in English and in government, she earned a Master’s degree in Mass Communication from the University of South Carolina. She is currently a third-year student at the University of South Carolina School of Law.
The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Calvin Newton III of Tampa, Fla. He is the grandson of Dr. and Mrs. James Edward Potterfield, Sr. of Florence, and Mrs. Nancy Brown Morris of Fernandina Beach, Fla., and the late Mr. John Calvin Newton, Jr. A graduate of the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Arts in political science, he earned a Juris Doctorate from the University of South Carolina School of Law and is employed by the Richland County Public Defender.
The bride’s sister, Keating Coleman Lowery, served as matron of honor, and friend Kathleen Lyne Davis as maid of honor. Bridesmaids included Noelle Marie Simons, cousin of the bride, Kathryn Batrick Baltzell, Martha Lilla Bratton, Laura Read Chapman, May Mills Dawson, Patricia Ruth Greenberg, and Meghan Olney Hemingway.
The groom’s father served as his best man. Groomsmen included Jacob Cheney Newton, brother of the groom, John Cheney Potterfield, uncle of the groom, John Dozier Coleman IV, brother of the bride, Benjamin Jackson Baldwin, Ryan Brooks Howell, Jack Russell Richert, and David Reynolds Williams.
Greeters were Caroline Marshall Baarcke, Elizabeth Wallace Hodges, and Ashlin Blanchard Potterfield, cousin of the groom. Ushers were Patrick Haynes Lowery, brother-in-law of the bride, and Joseph Patrick Manning. Scripture reader was Jane Marshall Simons, aunt of the bride.
A garden reception followed the ceremony. The couple will reside in Columbia.
