Character Tom Wingfield (Joey Webster) plays the narrator in “The Glass Menagerie” at the Florence Little Theatre. Behind him are, from left, Laura Wingfield (Susan Oliver), Amanda Wingfield (Celly Kahn), and Jim O’Conner (Andrew Chard). The play features the lives of a disfunctional family.
Florence Little Theatre will present Tennessee Williams’ “The Glass Menagerie” on Oct. 30-Nov. 7.
The stage classic tells the story of the Wingfields. Amanda Wingfield is a faded, tragic remnant of Southern gentility who lives in a dingy St. Louis apartment with her son, Tom, and her daughter, Laura. Tom seeks escape in alcohol, while Laura, who is crippled, lives life through a world of illusions she has created.
One evening, Tom invites a young man named Jim over for dinner with the family. A nice, ordinary fellow, Jim is perceived by Amanda as a possible husband for Laura. In spite of her crude and obvious attempts to entrap the young man, he and Laura get along nicely. And momentarily, she is lifted into a new world. But is it only a matter of time before her world is shattered to pieces?
Directed by Kendall Kiker, the FLT production stars Celly Kahn as Amanda, Joey Webster as Tom, Susan Oliver as Laura and Andrew Chard as Jim.
